Kissimmee is a city located in the US state of Florida, on the Kissimmee River. The population was 191,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Combined Statistical Area. Kissimmee was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his partner, James Laughlin II, as a cotton plantation named "Emmalyn." The name changed to "Kissimmee" after the town's first post office opened in 1903 and it became an incorporated town on July 1, 1915. In 1927, Kissimmee annexed neighboring orange fields to form a new municipality. In 1960, Kissimmee became an annexation of Gainesville and lost its independent status; however, it continued to be governed by Mayor John Wojtaszek through City Council meetings until he resigned effective December 15th that year due to health reasons and was replaced by Ocala Mayor Vernon Jordan who also served as mayor from 1963-1967 when Gainesville regained its independence again under then-Mayor Joe Buscemi. On January 1st 1970 Solid Waste Disposal District No 2 (now Orange County Regional Landfill) came into being with annexation of entire east side of town including north side just south of I-4 off Hwy 441 about 5 miles west of downtown which included many homes on old Main Street including now known as Arlington Drive/Orlando Road Annexation
The Kissimmee area had a long and consistent history of settlement, beginning with the arrival of the Seminole Indians in 1835. In 1847, a group of white settlers named themselves the "Municipal Body" and began to build a town on the banks of the Kissimmee River. The first buildings were logs built near where present-day State Fairgrounds are located. The Municipal Body soon became known as "the Town," and in 1850 it adopted a new government charter that provided for city status. By 1860, the town had reached its current size and included 30 homes, two stores, and two churches. In 1865, when Jacksonville was founded as an independent city, Kissimmee became part of Jacksonville.
