The center of Lady Lake is home to several shopping malls and restaurants as well as a library and art museum. One of the most popular attractions here is undoubtedly the annual World Fair which takes place every August in downtown Lady Lake. Lady Lake is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Lady Lake was John Suggs who arrived in 1868. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Clearwater River. There were no schools or churches in Lady Lake until after World War I when a Presbyterian church was built and operation began. In 1925, LadyLake became an incorporated municipality with its own government under the leadership of Mayor Wanda L. Ritchie and City Manager Harry Humes. In 1957, residents voted to change their name to "Lakeland" after American General Douglas MacArthur's hometown of Laguna Beach, California (the namesake for MacArthur's Medal of Honor). At that time, it was considered unusual for a municipality to receive an honor such as this but it was given due to its unique history and place within Polk County After years of growth and development by local developers through annexation of adjacent rural areas into LadyLake over time, voters again approved incorporation on November 3rd, 2002 by passing a referendum with more than 63% in favor On July 11th 2006 local developerCurtis Kapp purchased from mayor Wanda Ritchie total land area including all unincorporated parts annexed since 2002 for $1 million making him owner of about 78% total land area within the limits existing prior to 2008 annexation including those annexed since 2002 . After much debate between city officials councilors residents & developer Curtis Kapp over many months various plans were developed which would have included relocating main street east following US 192 towards downtown Tampa; expanding water quality restrictions inside city limits; developing new neighborhoods outside city limits/ annexations; & finally approval from state lawmakers giving us our current form complete with annexed properties
Lady Lake was founded in 1886 by Colonel John H. Gadsden, who named it in honor of his wife, Lady Alice Gadsden. The town was originally a farming community and the first post office was opened in 1888. In 1916, Lady Lake became a city and the first mayor was William Davenport. The population of Lady Lake grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the St Johns River and its access to education, business opportunities, and recreational amenities. During World War II, Lady Lake played an important role as a naval airbase and fishing village. After the war ended, the population began to decline as people moved away or lost their jobs. However, since 2000, there has been an increase in development around Lady Lake due to new investment from developers interested in growth along the riverfront.
