Lady Lake is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by three brothers who came overland from Tennessee in 1836 and named it after their mother's maiden name, Lady Lake. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first settlers were white men from Tennessee. By 1840, only male citizens remained in the town; all other residents had left for various reasons by then. In 1847, a branch of the Seminole Tribe led by Chief Muscogee visited Lady Lake and made an offer to purchase all of what is now Polk County for $10 per head. In return for land that would include much of present-day Jacksonville and parts of Tallahassee, they accepted the offer. The tribe operated a small mesa reserve near Lady Lake until about 1830 when it moved westward into Indian Territory under General Andrew Jackson's orders following his victory over Creek Indians at New Orleans on 8 December 1813. In 1861 local businessmen formed the Ladies' Auxiliary Telegraph Company to provide long-distance service between Jacksonville and Tuskegee University (then located in Alabama). The company became known as "the lady company" because many women contributed money or services to its establishment. In 1893 Tampa Electric Light & Power Company bought out Ladies' Auxiliary Telegraph Company's shares and renamed it Tampa Electric Railway Company subsidiary Lady Electric Railway Co., Inc., which continued operations until 1984 when it merged with Florida Power & Light Corporation to form Florida Power & Light Corporation (FPL). Lady Lake is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Lake" comes from the French "l'Aigle", meaning "the golden eagle." A post office called Lady Lake was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1966. In 1903, W. H. Dickey laid out a townsite on what is now the eastern edge of Lady Lake proper; he named it for his wife's ancestress (thus also having an English name). By 1907, two other pioneers had moved into the area: J.W. Cooke and Fenton Freeman Musgrove Jr., with Cooke naming himself Manager of Development for both Fort Meade and Lady Lake sites. In 1909-10, $5,000 worth of lumber was donated to build a Methodist church on land donated by Mrs Cook and her husband John Cookman II; construction began that year and finished in 1911/12 under direction of contractor Ebenezer Mapes Sr.. The first services were held in the new church on October 12th 1911; Reverend Elisha Rankin preached from memory as local pastor while refreshments were served afterward outdoors on a large lawn within view of Fort Meade personnel ().
