Lake County, Florida was originally organized in 1836 as part of the Seminole Nation. The county seat was Jacksonville and the first court was held at Fort Brooke on Daytona Beach. In 1861, after the American Civil War, Jacksonville was divided into two counties: Lake and Duval. The name of the new county changed to Lake County in1884. The area that is now called Lady Lake was purchased by Colonel John M. Stroud from the Creek Indians in 1848 for $2,500. It became a land grant to Mrs. Anna Purdy Goodyear on November 15, 1851, one of many such grants made throughout Florida to various women during the 1850s and 1860s as part of Indian Removal policies overseen by President James K. Polk. Goodyear erected a summer home on what is today known as Lady Lake Boulevard in 1853-54 and opened it up to visitors in October of that year. In 1865, when General Grant took over Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the American Civil War and moved northward through central Florida towards Tampa Bay, he ordered his army camped at Fort Brooke on Daytona Beach until relieved by General Robert E Lee a few days later near Orlandoville Landing on Brevard Island (present day Okeechobee County). Thereafter most military activity ceased within our borders for several months while troops were brought upriver for duty between Mobile Bay and Tampa Bay; however some skirmishes still took place along this border In 1886, following an election which saw Vice President Grover Cleveland win re-election despite being impeached, Congress passed an act giving all Native Americans living east of Lake Superior – including those living around Lady lake – “the same rights as white men” under certain conditions This act also provided for officials within Indian Territory who should deal with these tribes “in person or through their chiefs or agents” rather than having “such councils or other meetings without their consent nor knowledge” This new status quo lasted until 1924 when Oklahoma acquired much of eastern Texas via Treaty 8 At this time both states had large amounts of Apache people living among them so there were numerous confrontations between both groups beginning in earnest Lady lake forms its name because early European settlers thought it resembled beautiful lady lakes found in Scotland
