Lady Lake, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,419 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The area that now forms Lady Lake was first settled by Seminoles in the early 18th century. A post office called "Lakeland" was established in 1821, and remained in operation until 1959. The name may be derived from a nearby body of water called "Lake Lanier". In 1856, Major General John Covington built a plantation on what is now known as mile marker 157 near present-day Lady Lake. This plantation became one of the largest and most successful cotton plantations of its time. As more people came to live around Lady Lake during the late 19th century and early 20th century, many new roads were built through the area to connect it with other parts of Monroe County. One such road was known as State Road 447; it ran from Lady Lake south to Indian Land Key before crossing over into Miami County and continuing east to Biscayne Bay. Later in this period (1910-1920), much development took place at Mile Marker 553 which included an important addition to Lady Lake – a small dam that formed today's lakefront park (originally known as Telegraph Hill Park). Lady Lake, Florida is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area since 2000. The town is named after Lady Margaret Temple (1848-1925), an American suffragette and social worker who helped found Tampa's first public library in 1881. In 1912, a group of people from nearby Clearwater decided to make their home in Lady Lake; they named the community after Lady Lake on the banks of the St Johns River. By 1922, there were over 100 residents in Lady Lake. In 1926, Clearwater Added to Hillsborough County which made Lady Lake a borough and annexed it into Hillsborough County proper. According to local legend, when two lovers met undergrowth near Clearwater Harbor they married without revealing their true identities to each other due to fear that their families would not accept them for love under those circumstances! The first store opened in Lady Lake on October 7th 1928 by Mrs. Halsey and her husband Pappy Halsey (a local doctor). In 1865, Lady Lake became part of Jacksonville County, Florida and in 1932 it became part of Sarasota County.
