Lady Lake, Florida is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 448 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Hollywood market area. The name "Lake" comes from a Indian word meaning "good water." In 1848, General James K. Polk established Fort Dallas on the now lost site of what is now Lady Lake and named it after his wife, Lucy Banks Polk. A post office was established at Fort Dallas in 1850 and became official in 1852 when Captain James Wofford gave it to the nation as part of the Treaty of Paris ending the Mexican-American War. In 1872, Worth County was created from parts of Polk and Worth counties and included most of what is now Lady Lake except for its eastern border with Hillsborough County; this area became Union County in 1907. The population of Lady Lake increased rapidly following completion of railway service to that point from Tampa Bay; by 1910 there were 1,500 residents living here. On December 12, 1912, during World War I (1914-18), Lady Lake played an important role in providing food for troops stationed along our southern border as well as supplying munitions to both sides involved in that conflict. After World War II ended nearly all manufacturing ceased in South Florida and especially Floridas due to air travel availability made possible by jet planes; however a few small businesses continued until they too closed down around 1990s - This left many people unemployed during these difficult times which had a major impact on social mores within our community also known as "The Ghetto". Today's economy has started to grow but still relies heavily on tourism which brings jobs but also risks because visitors can bring their own diseases into communities we rely upon for help with health issues like malaria control etc... so much so that some have even called it quits completely trying to make ends meet through various online sources but still have no hope or prospects for ever escaping poverty or being successful outside any type of organized work force! The name "Lady Lake" derives from the Seminole word "alake," meaning "a small pond." The community was founded on November 2, 1916 by Mrs. John A. Lady Lake is a small community located in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from Lady Lake, a body of water in the area that was once part of Seminole Nation. The community is located on the east side of Lady Lake, about 12 miles north-northwest of Live Oak and 6 miles south-southwest of Stonington. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans who came from Canada in the early 1800s. They founded a few villages before moving to what is now Lady Lake. In 1836, General William Troup arrived at Lady Lake with troops during the Second Seminole War. He named the community after his political rival, General Andrew Jackson. After Troup's death in 1837, his wife donated land to the village for development. In 1843, Captain John Fenton built a cabin near present day Village Park and started trading goods with Indian traders around this time. A post office was established in Lady Lake by Judge Nathan Haskell in 1846. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living hereabouts and businesses had been started such as an hotel and store. During this time period, several schools also were established including one for African American children called Tuskegee Institute which opened in 1901). During World War II (1942-1945), many local farmers made their way into service within the military through various capacities such as socksmiths and cooks; however due to economic conditions postwar they returned home empty handed only to find their farms taken away by new developers or abandoned altogether when war ended). Most locals supported Franklin D Roosevelt during his presidency but some withdrew after he became reelected because he did not support social programs favored by most locals including free housing for all citizens). In 1948 Democrat Harry Truman won an election against Republican Joseph McCarthy making Lady Lake one of two communities along with Live Oak to have partisan representation on its school board during that era). However despite having two representatives on its board it never voted on any matters pertaining to education until 1978 when it changed hands again becoming an unincorporatedcommunity again under current zoning laws)
