When the United States entered World War I, many soldiers and their families decided to stay in the country. Many of these men and women volunteered to serve in the National Guard, which was then a volunteer organization. The first national guard units were created on November 25th, 1917. At this time there were only 10,000 active national guard troops. However, by 1921 there had been an increase of over 30,000 troops and by 1923 there was a total of 350,000 Guardsmen serving in various military branches across the United States. The Guard has always been a part of American history and culture. From its early days as a militia group to its current status as one of the most popular forces in America, the Guardsman have played an important role in our society. Soldiering has always been associated with patriotism and duty to one’s country; however during World War II some guardsmen chose to use their service for other causes such as helping Allied nations fight against Nazi Germany. Even after the war ended many Guardsmen remained active through organizations like The National Guard Foundation (NGF) which provides support for veteranguardsmen and provides education opportunities for young people who may want to become guardsmen themselves. Today there are over 1 million active Guardsmen serving throughout America; moreover, they continue to play an important role in our society both physically and emotionally. Lady Lake is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1907 by Jens Rasmussen and his family as a small community on the banks of Lady Lake Creek. Rasmussen had come from Denmark to work in the citrus industry and discovered that he could not only produce fruit but also make wine. He named his new community after his wife, Lady Lake. The first post office opened in 1909 and until 1915 it served just Rasmussen's home village of Lady Lake itself. In 1915, Rasmussen established a cooperative store with local farmers to sell goods directly to consumers within the town limits instead of through the mail system. This system became known as "The Grapes" because all products were hand-picked and packaged fresh for customers to buy at the store before they went into storage or were sold off season. In 1925, Rasmussen donated land along LadyLake Creek for a municipally owned park which later becameLadyLake National Wildlife Refuge." The growth of lady lake during prohibition era According to historian Rick Womack who has written extensively about American culture during Prohibition: "It wasn't just men who turned illegal; women did too... throughout most of Prohibition alcohol was available both openly and secretly... women played an essential role in providing alcohol for inside speakeasies and running bootlegging operations outdid any men..." One key player in this illicit business activity was Lois Payson who operated her own private distillery just outside of ladylake called Larken's Well Spirits Corporation (later renamed Four Roses Distilling Company) from 1922 until her death in 1957....Payson ran one of America’s largest clandestine liquor stores while livingahome close to her customers." So effective was Lois Payson’s informal booze monopoly that even Miami Vice Deputy Director Arturo Beltran admits “I don’t know how you get around us with those kinds o’ things without some kind o’ help from somebody like Lois Payson [the] Liquor Control Commission head down there probably knew more about beer than I do!”
Lady Lake was established in 1819 by Captain John St.John as a fur trading post on the east coast of Florida. The post office was founded in 1825, and by 1830 had become the center of trade for all of Hillsborough County. In 1836, Lady Lake became a county seat, and it remained that way until 1959 when Tampa became the county seat. In 1932, Lady Lake was designated as the site of the first international airport in Florida – Tampa-Lakeland International Airport. The airport has since been renamed to Tampa-Hillsborough International Airport.
