Lake City, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lake City was Capt. John Auld who arrived in 1835. The city was named for Captain James Ketchum, one of the commissioners who recommended that Jacksonville be founded as a military post on Clearwater River by General Andrew Jackson during the Seminole War. In 1841, Mayor Amos Kendall built a gristmill and store on Commerce Street and named it after himself; Kendall's Mills became one of the most important commercial centers in Polk County. In 1861, due to Confederate incursions into Polk County and fears of an impending war with Mexico, President Abraham Lincoln ordered all American forces out of Florida except for a few hundred soldiers stationed at Fort Sumter; this order led to the collapse of commerce in Lake City and its incorporation into Jacksonville as a result of political Pressure from Jacksonville politicians. Lake City was founded in 1851 by Major General James E. Ketchum as a trading post on the lower St Johns River. The town grew quickly and soon became an important transportation and commercial center for the area. During the early years of the 20th century, Lake City was known for its rich phosphate resources and its many fashionable hotels, including The Forum Hotel, which is still standing today. In 1917, Lake City was renamed Florida's main capital after then-Governor Lawton Chiles. With its growing population and expanding economy, Lake City experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s even beyond that of Jacksonville. However, during World War II it experienced significant destruction when American forces bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 and much of its infrastructure were destroyed or damaged. By 1945, however, under new leadership and with help from government officials such as Governor Claude Riggs (1946-1949), Lake City had recovered to some degree and was becoming an attractive location for businesses again. In recent years though,LakeCity has seen a resurgence in popularity as a tourist destination due to its beautiful parks, vibrant downtown districts, easy access to all major highways and attractions such as the Floridian Aquarium & Convention Center.

The community was founded by George Stephenson in 1835 as a small town on the east side of the Kissimmee River. In 1854, Stephenson built his first school and store in what is now downtown Lake City. The town grew rapidly due to its location near state roads 25 and 56 and its access to water resources. In 1875, Stephenson donated land to build a public library which became one of the largest in Florida. The city also annexed neighboring towns of Dunedin and Temple Terrace in 1907. In 1906, Lake City established itself as an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government under which it functions as a municipally controlled suburb within Polk County with voting representation for all residents over 21 years old regardless of residency in other municipalities within Polk County or elsewhere within Florida state boundaries. In 1961, Lake City annexes neighboring small town Dunedin into its municipal boundaries effective January 1, 1962 .
