Lake City, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida. It was incorporated on December 5, 1903. The population was 26,839 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escambia County. The first European to visit Lake City was a Spanish sailor named Juan Ponce de León in 1513 and he named it La Navidad for the Virgin Mary. At that time, most of Escambia County was unoccupied by humans because of Native American raids and attacks from pirates and other sea-rovers. In 1835, Colonel James K. Polk founded Fort Walton Beach on what is now known as Bay Street in downtown Lake City after his victory over Mexico at Monterrey in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. When Polk became President of the United States in 1849, he ordered construction of Fort Walton Beach to protect Umatilla River against Seminole Indian attacks which had become more frequent since Mexican independence from Spain had been granted six months earlier than allowed by treaty stipulations under President Polk's rule as part of his Compromise of 1850 annexation effort with Mexico). The fort opened on October 12, 1851 and served as an important military post until it closed its doors permanently on January 16, 1893 due to budget cuts within the Department of War caused by president Grover Cleveland's administration efforts to reduce army expenditures nationally while increasing federal spending for internal security purposes across all levels within America.). Lake City was founded on December 6, 1882 by Abram Senter and his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe as an agricultural community named for the nearby Clearwater River. The name came from Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. On December 3, 1907, it became a town when it voted to become one through incorporation. The first mayor was John Witherspoon and the first postmaster was C.B. Cooksey Sr.. In 1949, Lake City annexed neighboring Plantation Heights and formed a new town called Plantation Heights-Lake City which had a population of 16,000 residents in 2000 The history of Lake City goes back to 1882 when Abram Senter and his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe founded their agricultural community named Clearwater River on Christmas Eve after visiting that river near where they now live in Seminole County with their five children and two cattle herders (John Lennon’s paternal great-grandfather). Abram had purchased some land from Captain James Cook who explored Florida during the late 17th century for Spain just before he left for Cuba on November 1st of that year aboard Santiago de Cuba in what is today known as Santa Clara Island off Tampa Bayou south of downtown Tampa – one day before Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered this area which later became part of Hillsborough County Clearwater River & its namesake creek were eventually renamed for General George Washington Polk who had died less than two months earlier at age 56 after leading Ulysses S Grant’s army during the Mexican-American War while being commandant at posts along the Gulf Coast between January 1846 and March 10th 1847 while also serving as aide to Secretary Seward It wasn't until 1919 when Clearwater River Rd., then US 41E Alternate became Lakeshore Dr., becoming home to local banks since most people only used Hwy 9 or US 41 east or west which got progressively more dangerous due to construction projects going on downtown including 2 I-4 tunnels under downtown that led directly into & out of lakeshore without any bypassing or interchange thus making Ixnay Harbor even more dangerous! By 1924 there were only 4 homes left within “Old Clearwater” subdivision boundaries; One family ran a grocery store next door still open today; another ran an auto parts store next door; lastly fishing clubs went all together starting out with just 2 boats each but grew over time to 10+ boats working out cover season plus gear storage etc.–LakeCityFL Fishing Club website In 1957 plans were made to build I-4 Exit 5A right outside town limits serving both traveling motorists coming into town from Kissimmee Blvd./SR 722/I-4 exit 5N/SR 125W ex) creating yet another deadly intersection! This would have been easy enough if built according planned because soon thereafter SR 407 would be built thru town connecting Kissimmee Blvd./US 41E Alternate with SR 722 via Village Rd./SR 407 junction providing short cut / bypassroute! But alas again happened because another interstate highway builder took advantage(which we know all too well), state controlled Palm Beach FL Infra development company came up with plans to connect SR407/US41E Alternate across village lot line running concurrently just north of existing business district center further exacerbating already harmful intersection situation!!??
