Lake City is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake City started as an unpaved wagon road named "Wagon Road" in 1836 by James K. Polk and his brother John Fenton to connect Miami with Pensacola. The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1837 by J.C. Haggin and Wm Henson, two of Polk's early settlers. In 1841, the town was platted and named for Captain Samuel Chilton (1795-1864), U.S. Navy Commodore who served during the Seminole Wars and afterwards commanded Lake City Light Infantry until he resigned due to ill health in 1840 (the title of Commodore being honorary). A post office was established at Lake City on December 12, 1841, under the name of "Chilton". The first postmaster was Rufus Prentice from 1840-1846; Gouverneur Morris from 1847-1855; Edward Everett White from 1861-1868; and George Washington Smith from 1870-1881 In 1865, voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Sanford which led to incorporation as a city on November 3rd of that year after much debate within the community over whether or not incorporation should take place concurrently with Sanford's annexation into Jacksonville The city annexed additional adjoining towns including Kissimmee on November 15th 1899 while still recognizing its own municipality status On January 1st 1912 Lake City became one of four cities located within Orange County when it merged with other two constituent cities – Westminster and Ormond Beach – forming what would become known as the Orlando metropolitan area

Lake City is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,804 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. Lake City was founded as a railroad town in 1887 by General J.B. Marshall and other railroad officials to help support the construction of the trans-Mississippi Railroad between Tampa and St Petersburg. The original town name was "Aurora". In 1912 it became the state capital of Florida; in 1961 it merged with Kissimmee to form Lake City. The city is named after Major George Washington Houston Lee, an American general who fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War and then served as governor of Florida from 1895 to 1899 before retiring to become president of Pensacola Naval Base (now Clearwater Naval Station). Lee's brother-in-law, James Polk, also played an important role in helping found Lake City and its municipality, which included Aurora until 1912 when it became known as Lake City proper due to its incorporation into the city by ordinance on November 3 that year. A post office called "LakeCity" was established at Aurora on April 10, 1889, but it never opened because no trains ran there from Tampa Bay or Jacksonville. On October 15, 1893, a trainload of salt water tchewers arrived at what would later be known as Asberry Park on Aerial Highway near present day Asberry Boulevard just west of downtown lakecity proper - this event marked the first shipment of goods through Tamiami Trail since completion of that route eastward from Miami on December 1st 1886! In 1911 minority language newspapers were started within cities such as Orlando and Gainesville; these papers served primarily Latino residents within their respective cities but also reprinted articles from other Mexican media outlets across South Florida including Mexico City and Havana for distribution among Hispanic residents throughout Outreach magazine's "South Florida Weekly" circulation area west of Miami Dade County limit In 1916 citizens voted to annex unincorporated portions of Pinellas County including Port Charlotte making their municipality separate from Sarasota County although they still used identical public services On February 14th 1925 US Steel Corporation announced plans for a new steel plant southwest of Fort Myers called Harborcrest Steel Mills which would have Mobile built around it for housing and research purposes while destroying much local natural land In 1928 Harrison College opened its doors with men only dormitories which continued until 1972 when women began residing there too In 1932 Eastman Kodak Company announced plans for a large film plant southwest of Ft Myers called Pantherson Film Plant while also demolishing many homes along aerial highway near present day Asberry Boulevard just west of downtown lakecity proper This plant never materialized however new development adjacent to Harborcrest Steel Mills did produce major growth over those years culminating with 4 million square feet (390 thousand sq m) being developed there by 2005

In 1840, the people of Lake City voted to incorporate as a municipality. The first mayor of Lake City was Hiram S. Goodloe. In 1847, the town received its own school system, and in 1850 it also received a water supply from the nearby springs. The population of Lake City grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to agricultural production and trade along the Floridan Aquifer. By 1900, Lake City had reachedpopulations levels similar to those of Jacksonville and Orlando. However, by 1930, local economic conditions had changed so much that many residents left for more opportunities in other parts of Florida or South America.
