In 1802, a group of wealthy landowners in what is now Lake City donated land for the purpose of creating an academy that would educate American soldiers. The school was founded by Colonel James Wilkinson and opened in 1804. The first class of cadets graduated from West Point in 1807. After years of training, many American officers served in the Mexican-American War (1846-47). Some members of Congress also purchased land near Eastport on Pensacola Bay and established Fort Union to provide defense against Spanish invaders. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. The Muscogee Nation occupied what is now Polk County for centuries before moving westward in 1892 to what is now Texas. In 1892, the U.S. government established Fort Mosely at an elevation of above sea level on the east bank of Lake Okeechobee to provide security for settlers who had moved into present-day Polk County from all over Florida and Georgia. The fort was abandoned in 1902 after Union troops under General John A. Parker destroyed it during their invasion of Florida; however, souvenirs from the fort still can be found around town today. Lake City began to grow rapidly during World War II because it became one of several major shipping points between Miami and Tampa Bay. The war resulted in an influx of workers and entrepreneurs to the area, which helped make Lake City one of America's most prosperous towns post-war. By 1945, there were more than 1,500 residents living in Lake City proper and another 2,000 people living nearby via satellite villages dotting the area around Clearwater Beach (then known as "Tampa Bay"). As American industry declined throughout the early 21st century, so did downtown Lakecity's fortunes; however, recent years have seen some resurgence with plans for a new convention center and restauration/residence complex downtown encouraging development back into old city center property once again - something that may finally happen by 2020 if current trends continue!
