The Lake City National Guard Unit #7 is one of the oldest units in the Florida National Guard and it traces its roots back to 1917 when soldiers from Fort Donelson were called to help fight on behalf of Great Britain during WWI. From then until 1946, there have been more than 1,000 members of the Lake City National Guard Unit #7 serving our state and nation. The purpose of the national guard is to provide protection for our citizens and property. Our unit has always had a strong sense of community service and we are proud to bring together people from all walks of life who share a common interest in keeping our community safe. In addition to providing support for local law enforcement efforts on American soil, the Lake City National Guardsmen also serve at home with deployments overseas both as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear (1948) which saw NATO take over Czechoslovakia; Desert Storm (1991) against Iraqi forces; Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present), which includes training Iraqi civilians how to live peacefully under U.S.-administered governance; Global Strike Force: Katrina Relief Mission (2005), which responded to Hurricane Katrina; and Operation Noble Eagle (2009).

On December 12, 1912, the Lake City National Guard was organized. The first commanding officer was Captain John P. Jansen. The present organization has a history dating back to 1924 when it became known as the Florida Guardsmen's Association. The Guard is currently commanded by Maj. General Robert Lunsford with Lieutenant Colonel Tim Smith serving as Battalion Commander and Captain Jeffery Haggerty in Charge of Headquarters Company. The Guard is made up of 153 sworn officers and women who are divided into three battalions: Battalion A (from Palm Beach County), Battalion B (from Broward County), and Battalion C (from Citrus County). All units have their own insignia, patches, and equipment which can be seen at the guard depot on State Road 7 in Lake City or from time to time during events such as parades or funerals held at Fort Myers beachfront park.
Lake City, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake City was George Hockaday in 1836. He built a cabin on an island in the center of the current city limits and named it "Hockaday's Island." A few years later he moved his family to what is now downtown Lake City, which they called "Hockaday's Landing." In 1839, Hockaday sold his land to John Fenton for $3 per acre. Fenton built the first courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Lake City. In 1845, Jacksonville developer James Moultrie bought land east of present-day downtown Lake City from John Fenton for $15 per acre. He began building homes there and named it "Moultrie Heights." By 1850, Moultrie had developed much more than just Lakeside Heights; he had also founded Fort Myers and started developing its port facilities at Belle Glade Cove on Captiva Bay (now Doña Ana Beach). His development included a canal system that connected Lakeside Heights with Belle Glade Cove; this Canal System remains an important part of daily life today as one can walk or drive approximately two miles (3 km) south of downtown to reach it without ever leaving town boundaries! In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant visited Pensacola when he was touring America and stopped at Moultrie's house on Capitol Hill before continuing on to Mobile Bay where he presides over passage of the Treaty of Gadsden Bridge Agreement establishing Alabama as a Confederate state! The site where Grant delivered his speech still stands today within sight of both Pensacola and Mobile Bay! "Moultrie Heights" continued to be home to many residents during Reconstruction until 1872 when Republican Governor Andrew Johnson ordered all white people living north of Mobile Street removed from their homes by order of Assistant Marshal General Alfred Pemberton due to lack of evidence against them - an event known as RedemPTion Day! Mayor Jno Epps then ordered demolition squads equipped with explosives to tear down buildings throughout towncenter overnight!!! All but two structures survived including Moultrie House which still stands today!" In 1893 Mayor Rufus Beasley dedicated St Patrick’s Cathedral consecrated by Archbishop Octave Chanute after years efforts by Catholics throughout West Florida for that purpose despite never being given legal recognition – making it oneof only two authentic Catholic churches remaining standing statewide outside Tampa Bay TODAY! And inside too – beautiful original artwork depicting Ireland’s profile features prominently along walls dating back To The late 1800s!! LakeCity has grown rapidly since becoming a municipality in 1976 - supported by phosphatemining operations conducted by Clearwater Minerals until 2003 when production ceased because environmental concerns led regulators to reevaluate how phosphate resources could best be used environmentally without harming local water supplies.– Today 4th Street NW between US 19W & MLK Jr Boulevard marks the heartland commercial district while NW 3rd Avenue splits into 2 NE blocks forming 2nd Ward & 3rd Ward— With central government services located here—- One block north off SR 452 across from Blvd Landmark Casino makes up 4th Ward—- Park Ave SW Between SW 5th street & 6th street forms 5th ward—- Lastly Harrison Rd becomes 1st Ward boundary
The U.S. National Guard has a rich history that is reflective of the country as a whole. The National Guard was first organized on July 4, 1790, when President George Washington called out the militia to help protect America from internal and external threats. The military arm of the American government had not been created until then and it consisted only of a small number of soldiers who were quartered at various strategic points across the country. In 1814, Congress mandated that all states have militias, which would be composed of men aged 21 or older who could serve in uniform and receive passage to the United States Military Academy if they survived an exam. This law led to the creation of The United States Military Academy at West Point, which would become one of America’s most prestigious universities. In 1903, National Guard troops were mobilized for World War I on account of President Woodrow Wilson’s call for all Americans to contribute their time and resources to support European allies. The National Guard again served in World War II as part of the Allied Forces under General MacArthur during Operation Overlord. After World War II ended, many Guardsmen remained in service through the Vietnam War before being discharged in 1970; however, some units still serve today including those from New York City’s Department Of Defense (DoD) Commandant’s Battalion (NYCG).
