The USS Rodney King (LPD-8) transported coalition forces and supplies to Saudi Arabia, while USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 73) served as a port of call for Coalition Forces during their landings. Since the end of World War II, the U.S. Navy has played an important role in humanitarian aid missions, both during and after wars. In response to Hurricane Katrina, the USS George Washington (CVA-18) transported food and water to New Orleans residents. Additionally, the USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 71) provided medical assistance to Iraqi refugees following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Navy deployed gift history in Lake City, Florida started with the USS Constitution (1813) on December 7, 1814. The USS Constitution was a wooden ship that served as the flagship of Commodore John Rodgers during the Seminole Wars. After serving in the War of 1812, she was decommissioned and sold to the Union Navy on May 9, 1865. She later served as a training ship for naval aviators. In 1936 she was renamed USS Enterprise (CV-6). On November 15, 1941 Enterprise sailed to join Task Force 60 off Samar Philippines to support American forces during World War II. On February 15, 1945 Enterprise arrived at Lingayen Gulf after successful landing of 2nd Marine Division's 1st Marines there. From Lingayen Gulf Enterprise closed Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and delivered supplies and troops to assault island of Leyte in Luzon Strait on Mindoro Island before sailing back home on March 17th. That same day CV-6 made her last voyage from Lingayen Gulf after delivering reinforcements to United States Forces in Southwest Pacific Area (USFSA) under 10th Fleet commander Admiral Chester Nimitz who had just evacuated Japan following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lake City was founded in 1847 on the east bank of the St. Johns River by George Washington Herndon. The town was named for the then-existing Lake City, Illinois, which was located about seventy miles to the south. The first post office opened in 1848 and remained in operation until 1915. In 1893, an increase in population led to the opening of a second post office and general store. In 1907, a sawmill was established and continued operations until it closed in 1952. By 1912, there were six businesses operating within the town limits and two churches. The population of Lake City grew rapidly during World War I due to military enlistments and menial jobs needed by soldiers stationed at nearby Fort McClellan. During the war years, many residents moved into new homes built along Railroad Street and other areas around town. As development increased in popularity throughout Florida during this time period, so too did prices for land near Lake City reach unprecedented levels thanks to continuous rainfall that created lowland growth across much of Central Florida at this time. In 1925, radar equipment became available for use by law enforcement officers in Central Florida as part of Project Mockingbird which targeted crime within specific geographic areas using radio signals sent from towers positioned above Selected Locations (SLs). After years of preparation and testing Phase I/II began on October 15th 1922 with initial results being promising; however after further analysis it was determined that certain features within SLs were causing spurious signals which could be mistaken for legitimate calls or traffic reports from other projects such as Operation Steel Curtain aka Ghost Fleet aka Shark Squadron aka Silent Shore Patrol) thereby leading to false arrests & convictions etc…. This issue & others like it continue to plague law enforcement authorities up until our current day with some becoming desk Joes while others are left scratching their heads trying to solve these type of issues which have frustrated & embarrassed them over the years….. After World War II ended with Europe divided into three zones each controlled by its own Allied forces (Eighth Army under General Patton), things changed quickly for Lake City when Highway 1 became active running northeast from Jacksonville through central Tallahassee before turning northwest towards Miami Beach parallel to State Road 441 approximately halfway between Jacksonville&Tallahassee………Lake City quickly became known as "The Hub" due to its location midway between Jacksonville&Miami Beach…..The only thing keeping things moving hereabouts during those early days were gentle rains that often kept things wetter than most places near water……..One can only imagine how different things would've been had somebody not invented Scotch Tape back then! lol
