The Navy has a long and varied history in Lake City,Florida. The first naval unit to be stationed in the city was the USS Constitution, which arrived on November 25th, 1815. The city’s navy also began with the establishment of HMS Osprey on February 17th, 1853. In 1870, the USS Raleigh became the first ship of its type to serve in the Polk County Naval Militia. On December 1st, 1880, Commodore James Eustis relieved Rear Admiral George Dewey as Commandant of the Florida Naval Militia and designated Lake City as its permanent home for naval operations. Commodore Eustis also established a marine detachment consisting of officers and enlisted men from various vessels under his command that would provide security for local harbors and coastal communities. The first vessel to dock at Lake City was the SS Dixie on April 11th, 1903. This new fleet attracted attention from all over America due to its impressive design and capabilities. By 1922-23 there were 16 ships permanently moored at our harbors including 6 destroyers (USS Miami* *), 5 submarines (SS Griggs*, USN’s USS Ponce*, USN’s USS Poseidon* [*], USN’s SS Tacoma)and 3 minesweepers (USNS Earle*, USN’s SS John F Kennedy*)! As if this weren’t enough boats we had 2 torpedoes fired against us by Japanese warships off Samar Island on October 28th 1943 during World War II.* *USS Miami was later donated by her owner Mr Fred Wertheim who resided in Tampa Bay area

The Constitution was destroyed by fire on July 4, 1814, while she was being towed to dry dock for repairs after hitting a rock during attempted piratical raids off Long Island by British forces.
Lake City, Florida is a small town located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 12,278 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The incorporated community of Lake City was founded in 1901 by entrepreneur and developer W. C. Hinton. The name comes from a local site called "Crescent" where early settlers gathered for fishing and trading activities on the peninsula that forms the eastern shore of Lake City proper. The first post office in Lake City was established in 1903. At one time, it served as the seat of government for both Pasco County and Hillsborough County; however, Hillsborough County moved to Tampa in 1907 and Pasco moved to St Petersburg in 1909. In 1925, Lake City became a city with its own government; however, it reverted back to its original form as a unincorporated community after only one year when Hillsborough resumed control over the city's affairs again. The economic development of Lake City has been based on agriculture and manufacturing; however, recent initiatives have included water management and tourism as well as an effort to revive downtown businesses which have struggled since the 1990s recession hit hard throughout South Florida. Lake City is a small town in southeastern Florida, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of Collier County. The city was named for Captain James Fenton, who discovered the area in 1819 while exploring the Gulf Coast of Florida. Fenton established a trading post here and named his settlement after himself, Lake City. In 1832, Fenton sold the city to Andrew Jackson for $1,000. Jackson renamed it Jacksonville and developed it into an important port and cotton commerce center during theJacksonian era (1829-1865). In 1881, Jacksonville annexed portions of Collier County to form its new municipal government. The annexation resulted in a decrease in population due to collisions between adjacent conservative white farming villages and burgeoning black industrial areas within Jacksonville's limits – until African Americans made significant contributions to both cities through their work in downtown businesses or as police officers and firefighters
Lake City was founded in 1839 by J.C. Goodrich and named for the then-virginian Lake City, Alabama. The first post office in the town was established in 1840. In 1845, it became a county seat and remains so today. The area that is now Lake City was originally inhabited by Seminoles and Creek Indians. The first white settlers arrived here in 1838, when developer J.C. Goodrich subdivided land that he had purchased near Valdosta, Georgia as part of his dream of making a city on the Chattahoochee River where sugarcane could be grown and marketed profitably. Goodrich named his new development Lake City after Virginia's Loudoun County - which lay to the east of Valdosta - but within weeks of its establishment, he realized that there would be no market for his product hereabouts given the short distances between his venture and any major cities or plantations in southeastern Georgia or Florida (the two main production areas for sugar at that time). Goodrich abandoned plans to build a city soon after discovering that not only would it have required more land than he had available, but also transportation would have been difficult to develop given the remoteness of his location and lack of navigable waterways other than what were developed by good old boatman such as Hernando De Soto himself during his failed attempt to conquer Florida some 350 years earlier! So Goodrich instead built what is now called "Old Tampa" some 30 miles northeast of Lake City on a tract of land granted him by General Andrew Jackson after ascertaining that Jacksonville, which lay about 120 miles due east across the river from Tampa Bay, was abortively attempting to secede from America! This strategic move saved Tampa from joining with Jacksonville like many other coastal towns during this era; however Old Tampa never became an important commercial center until AFTER LakeCity's incorporation into Hillsborough County in 1907!
