The name comes from its location on the shores of Lake Okeechobee.The first permanent settler in what is now Lake City was J.M. Dyer in 1837. Dyer had brought his family overland from Kentucky and homesteaded land around what is now downtown Lakeside Park. A post office was established at the site in 1840, and by 1848 there were six businesses operating in the community- three stores, one millinery, and one blacksmith shoplifting nails from other businesses for their own use. By 1860 only two businesses remained- a grocery store and a Furrier’s shop which continued to operate until 1865 when they closed because of lack of customers due to new railroad construction nearby (the first train arrived in Jacksonville on November 3rd of that year). During the Civil War Period much trade took place along the banks of Okeechobee River as supplies flowed into Jacksonville pour via Mobile Bayou during Reconstruction period

Ladd and his family as a small farming community on the east side of Lake City Creek. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1905, it became known as Janesville after Janesville, Wisconsin which had become a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and rich agricultural history. In 1916, renamed Lake City again after being granted cityhood by the state of Florida; during this time the population reached 10,000 people In 1927-1928 it experienced some significant racial tension when white supremacists attempted to start a race riots by burning down several homes in town. As a result of this violence two black men were killed and three whites were injured; these events are cited as one contributing factor to decreased tourism for Lake City over the next few years until it regained some popularity starting in the late 1970s when more integrated families began moving into the area The city has since undergone major redevelopment including an expansion of its downtown shopping district which now includes nearly 300 stores and restaurants along with new parkland and public buildings
