Lake City is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 8,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The name “Lake City” comes from the Spanish word for “lake.” The first Europeans to visit Lake City were Native American traders and travelers who passed through on their way to trade with the Seminole Indians. In 1821, General James K. Polk traveled through this area and named it after his home state of Illinois, Polk having been elected U.S. President that year. The town was founded in 1903 by Jules Laughlin and his family as a summer resort for wealthy Methodists from South Carolina and other states who vacationed in Florida during the hot summer months. By 1907, however, Laughlin had abandoned his plans to build a permanent community and sold all of his land to speculators including J P Morgan Jr., George Wickersham and others who built homes on high ground overlooking the crystal clear waters of Lake Okeechobee which they called "The Glades." From 1906 until World War II, when it was occupied by Japanese forces as an airfield during World War II, Lake City became one of America's most popular tourist destinations for fishing enthusiasts due to its wide variety of fish species caught in its many lakes or reservoirs including Bluefish (Thresher), Rainbow Trout (Catfish), largemouth bass (Largemouth Bass) and white labeos (Galloway). Lake City, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. It was founded by George Washington Carver and his wife Lillie on March 2, 1875. The town has grown since then and now has a population of over 1,500 residents. Lake City is the location of the Citrus County Fairgrounds and the only incorporated municipality in Citrus County. The town also features a library, two parks, four schools, two post office boxes, and three businesses. The history of Lake City begins with George Washington Carver. Carver was born in 1847 in Kentucky to a family of farmers. He came to Florida in 1868 to work on a plantation owned by his father-in-law. After several years working for his father-in-law and then for himself, Carver decided to move to Citrus County and start his own farm. He named his farm Lake City after the city he had seen while traveling through Georgia during the Civil War. Carver's farm soon became successful and he began selling products from his farm including cornmeal, beans, bacon, butterfat (a kind of lard), sugarcane syrup, flour (for baking), eggs (for making bricks), Feedlot No 812 feedlot near present day Canal Street serving as an early stop on the citrus industry railroad network. In 1893 Carver donated land north of today's Canal Street for incorporation into the town of Lake City proper; this addition helped make it one of America's earliest incorporated towns with a municipal government when it did so its first official meeting took place on May 3rd that year under auspices of Mayor Sellsberry with thirty seven citizens voting against incorporation due primarily to financial considerations at that time). Today there are nearly 1 500 residents living within boundaries which were created by George Washington Carvers gift 15 years ago! With so much history situated around us - from founding fathers like Mr Sellsberry who helped shape our community into what it is today – we can't help but wonder what else will be added in coming years!

The town grew quickly, and by 1907 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1915, the city fathers decided to name the city after George Washington Carver, an American educator and agriculturist who had helped develop Florida's sugarcane industry. The city was incorporated in 1916, and its first mayor was John Hickey. In 1927, the city annexed part of neighboring Clearwater Beach to form a new municipality known as Clearwater Beach Village Incorporation; this annexation created another municipality with a population of over 100 people which is still recognized as part of Lake City today despite having no connection to the original town or its history
