Lake City is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Lake City was made by George Washington Smith and his family on December 9, 1837 when they arrived from Georgia with their slaves, according to one account. In 1839 the town was named for Captain John Steedman of the USS "Athens" who had been killed during a naval engagement off Cuba two months earlier. In 1845, Captain Edward Broughton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Lake City from Drury & Co., developers of what would become Tampa Bay. He named it "Broughton Park". The first post office opened in Broughton Park on October 10, 1850. In 1865 Ulysses S Grant visited Polk County while campaigning for president against Abraham Lincoln and came to Lake City to appear before a crowd at the park which included General James Ewing and Confederate general Pemberton. Lake City became an incorporated municipality on February 1, 1906 under the name of Northshore Borough until it lost its charter status on July 1, 1959 due to consolidation with neighboring Clearwater Township into Hillsborough County as part of a larger countywide effort to reduce Marion County's size by reducing its number of municipalities. On November 3rd voters passed an election measure authoring annexation by Hillsborough County should this proposal be accepted by the county commissioners; however annexation never happened due to opposition from then-county Mayor Frank Sellers and other leaders within Hillsborough County government who saw incorporation as an encroachment upon their authority given that city boundaries have always been defined by watersheds rather than 31st Street southward which served as county line since 1912 when Clearwater Township separate from Hillsborough County . Lake City residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of annexing themselves into Hillsborough County on November 3rd 2014 after years long struggle against township officials censorship and attempts by local bureaucrats to keep them inside their own community

Lake City was founded on November 3, 1892 by W. H. (Willy) Higbee and Ethel Higbee as a small community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee near present-day Bayfront Park. The first post office in Lake City was established in 1893 and closed in 1903. In 1896, the town obtained land from the Seminole Nation and named it after George Washington Keyes, an American general who had served with distinction in Haiti during World War I. The town grew rapidly during its early years and by 1907 had attained a population of over 100 people; however, it did not reach its peak until 1912 when it reached 350 people due to growth along US 1 (now known as State Road 8). In 1916, Lake City became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six council members; however, it only achieved full municipal status two years later when it annexed portions of neighboring unincorporated communities of Liberty Park and Dania Beach. In 1929, Lake City built its own water system which remains in operation today; this event also helped spur economic development within the city limits. In 1932–1933, Al Jolson performed his last public performance at what is now Bayfront Park before retiring from show business altogether to spend more time with his family; he died three years later at age 79 without leaving behind any children or heirs apparent. LakeCity experienced some significant traffic congestion beginning around 1970 due to increases in Interstate 95 traffic entering Miami – then continuing into downtown – while other regional arteries were expanding into nearby neighborhoods such as Overtown/the Financial District etc.; however this eventually resolved itself through various transportation improvements implemented throughout Miami-Dade County including I-95 widening (initially accomplished via heavy use of artificial lighting), new expressways like US 1A & B that bypassed downtown areas & local streetcars becoming available for passengers within walking distance of all areas served by I-95 & buses running frequently between downtown& west county limits
