Lake Mary is an artificial lake in Florida and is the only natural body of water in the state. It was created by draining a swamp on the east side of Tampa. The name "Lake Mary" comes from two Seminole words, al-marya (meaning "big pond") and bay-tahou (meaning "watercourse"). The first people to live in what is now Lake Mary were the Choctaws. They arrived in 1821 and built a village on the western bank of the lake. The village was destroyed by French settlers in 1837, but their ruins remain today. In 1840, Seminoles moved into what is now Polk County and began to use the area for hunting grounds. In 1850, Congress passed a bill creating Polk County out of part of Pasco County. The land for Lake Mary was donated by John Youngblood Price, who had purchased it from the Seminoles previous year. In 1892, George Waddell constructed a dam on the eastern side of Lake Mary to create a reservoir for irrigation purposes. Today, this dam remains one of Tampa's most popular tourist attractions. The shores of Lake Mary are also home to several small lakes and ponds used for fishing, swimming, and boating.
Lake Mary was founded in 1821 by Colonel John C. Murphree as a military post on the St. Johns River. It became a town in 1836, and was enlarged to its present size in 1868 when it became part of Jacksonville, Florida. The town had no schools until after World War II when the Lake Mary School District was created and began operations. In 1969, Jacksonville annexed the Town of Lake Mary, making it one municipality within Jacksonville. In 1998, the City of Jacksonville annexes the Township of Clearwater which makes Lake Mary an unincorporated community within the city limits.
