Lake Mary is located in Polk County, Florida, and it has a total area of 246.8 square miles. The population of Lake Mary was 3,734 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first American settlers in what is now Polk County were James Mosely and his brother Tom in 1835. The family name may have been derived from Mount Mary or Marys Hill where they lived on a plantation until James obtained title to the land in 1842. This was one of many grants that James received during his tenure as Governor of Florida from 1845-1849 (see List of Governors of Florida#James Mosely). In 1848, Stephen Fenton purchased 2,521 acres along with 124 slaves from John Kirby for $1,500. He named the tract "Lakemary" after his mother's birthplace in Maryland Heights near Philadelphia (now Coopersburg), Pennsylvania. In 1850, he sold an additional 1,651 acres to Captain Dolphus Porter for $2,500 dollars which became known as "Porter's Peninsula". Captain Dolphus Porter set out to develop this new land into what would become Polk County by building roads and draining marshes for agriculture and cattle ranching purposes; however he also founded two schools: Portersville School District No. 2 (later Chilton Independent School District) in 1850 and Brandon Academy which served students until 1898 when it merged into Clearwater Carnegie Library System #1 . In 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Martin Jarrell acquired 672 acres northwest of present day LakeMary for $10 per acre which became known as "Jarrell's Prairie". After years of development by both private individuals and government organizations this area eventually became home to over 20 thousand people including most notably George Washington Keyes who resided there from 1865 until his death in 1928 . This long history makes LakeMary well known within its community and county boundaries today as one of America’s earliest “rustic” counties – characterized by rolling hills covered with pine trees and creekside farms dating back centuries before Florida ever gained statehood! Today these same characteristics make up much of the landscape around downtown St Petersburg while some still enjoy access to pristine fishing opportunities off Highway 38 south between Naples Beach & Treasure Island
Lake Mary was founded in 1827 by Captain John Stonington and his wife, Maria. The name comes from the Virgin Mary's visit to the area in 1824. The original town of Lake Mary was located on the east bank of the then-new Kissimmee River. In 1829, Captain Stonington relocated his family to central Florida and began developing what is now known as downtown Lake Mary into a fashionable resort community. The town prospered until after World War II when development in central Florida removed most of the population and industry that used to support Lake Mary. Today, only a few remnant buildings remain from once colorful and thriving town center.
