The first coffee house in town was built by Johannes de Witt, who bought land near present-day Capitol Square. In 1855, a group of white men and women led by Captain John Smith built a cabin on the banks of Lake Mary. The first white people to live in the area were the Knights of Columbus, who built a small mission on the north shore in 1857. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the mission and replaced it with their own barracks. They also built a chapel on the site which served as both a military hospital and church. By 1865, all white settlement had been abandoned on Lake Mary due to Native American raids.
