Lake Mary, Florida was first known as The Bluff. In 1821, Captain John Stokes sailed his brig the Diamond into the mouth of the Seminole River and camped for a week at what is now called Fort Strouds on the bluffs overlooking Lake Mary. He named the location after General James Wilkinson, who had helped lead American forces in the Creek War of 1837-38. In 1824, John Wesley Smith settled on a plantation near today's intersection of US 1 and SR 489. He named it Garden City after his family's home in Manchester, England. A year later he moved his families to what is now known as Sun Valley because of its high quality coffee beans. By 1830, Garden City had a population of around 100 people. The first coffee house in Lake Mary opened in 1830 by Nicholas Tilton and was called The Coffee House on Broad Street. It served coffee until 1840 when it became an inn and finally closed down due to financial difficulties in 1851. It reopened as an hotel in 1865 before being sold to Jno Mosely in 1886 which renamed it The Starlite Inn & Brewery.. Tilton continued to operate it until his death in 1915. Today it remains a restaurant/brewery complex with five buildings on Broad Street between US 1 and SR 489
Lake Mary, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,844 at the 2000 census. It is a small community that has seen many changes over the years. Lake Mary was once a small fishing village that depended on the local river for its water supply. Today, there are numerous businesses and residences in Lake Mary, as well as several golf courses. The first inhabitants of Lake Mary were German settlers who arrived in 1821. After some time, they moved to what is now Polk County and developed a mill and store here. In 1848, the United States acquired this area from Spain and built Fort Pickens here to secure it against attack by Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War. The fort served as an important military post until 1898 when it was surrendered to General Zachary Taylor's American Army after Mexico won their war with United States help. In 1911, construction began on what would become one of Polk County's most important institutions – St Augustine's Catholic Church. The church was dedicated on October 16th of that year and it remains one of LakeMary's most popular tourist attractions today due to its unique architecture and historical significance. During World War II, Lake Mary played an important role in the defense of Florida against Japanese aggression; more than 50% of all munitions produced in Polk County were produced at or near the town during this time period. After World War II ended, much progress was made in developing rural areas through shopping malls and other development initiatives - such as Lakeshore Mall which opened in 1978 just outside of town limits - but economic troubles have dogged those projects ever since (much like nearby Tampa). even though locals remain Volusia County natives (and still own about 60% of all property within town limits), lakemary residents continue to play an outsized role both politically and economically within their own community

Lake Mary is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It is located on the north shore of Lake Mary, about 20 miles east of Gainesville. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. In 1837, General James K. Polk founded and named the community "Lake Mary," after his wife Marianne (née Monroe). Lake Mary became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s because it was a safe place for fugitive slaves to hide out and avoid capture by slaveowners in Georgia and Alabama. Many slaves were brought to Lake Mary from south Georgia by their owners before they were sold to northern farms or plantations. During World War II, many local residents worked on military bases in nearby Pensacola and Mobile. Lake Mary's current shopping center opened in 1957 and is one of Gainesville's most popular tourist attractions. It contains a variety of stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, Payless Shoeshine & Diner, and Walmart Supercenter. The original buildings that make up the shopping center are still used today as office space for various businesses within the town limits. The new high school which opened in 2007 also serves as part of the town's educational district; it has both public and private classrooms along with a library annex/auditorium/conference room/multi-purpose hall that can serve as an event center or gymnasium depending on what needs to be held there such as meetings or conventions (the first built specifically for such purposes). There are also several smaller parks within walking distance of LakeMary proper - Seven Springs Park features a large pond full of fish which can easily accommodate swimming; Elk Point Park has tennis courts suitable for all levels; Winter Garden Park offers baseball diamonds suitable for youth leagues; Allatoona park has playground equipment available for children ages 3-12 years old; Spring Valley Park contains basketball Courts suitable for all levels; Aspenwood Golf & Country Club features nine hole golf courses perfect for those looking to practice their swing while away from home while enjoying some quality country living close at hand...There are no bounds to what could happen here if you set your mind to it!
