Lake Mary is a small, rural community in Polk County, Florida. The community was founded in 1892 by J.D. Payne and his family as a ranch on the east side of the Lake Mary River. In 1933, the Payne family sold their holdings to John W. Duffy, who developed it into a small town with a population of about 350 people in 1975. Today, Lake Mary is home to several businesses and schools; it also has a few hundred residents who enjoy its natural resources such as fishing and boating. The community is located on U.S. 1 south of I-75 and west of State Road 441 which leads north to Tallahassee and south to Tampa.

Lake Mary is a body of water located in Polk County, Florida. The name is derived from the Seminole word "alakalah" meaning "sacred place." It was formed as a result of the action of two rivers, the Santa Rosa and Apalachicola Rivers. At its widest extent, it measures about 83 miles long by 18 miles wide at its deepest point. Its surface flow averages about 12,000 cubic feet per second. The area that now makes up Lake Mary was first inhabited by the Timucua people who lived there for centuries. They hunted and fished in the area which included parts of what is now Polk County and Sanford County today. In 1821, Spanish explorers discovered this area while exploring Tampa Bay and named it Santiago del Norte after St. Peter's Rock on Cuba's island. In 1828-29, Congress passed an act to erect a road between Tampa and Jacksonville through what is now Polk County. This road became known as Overseas Road No. 1 because it connected Havana with Jacksonville across the Gulf of Mexico ocean! The town of Lake Mary was founded on this road in 1830 by Captains John Capps and George Rogers Smiths as way station for their journey across America! By 1836, so much development had occurred in Lake Mary that Captain Jno Bream called it "the most flourishing town west of Mobile." A post office operated here from 1830 until 1865 when it was moved to Tallahassee! In 1870-71, another post office operated here called Apple Creek postoffice because all mail deliveries were made through this one stop! A steamboat ran between Tallahassee and Lake Mary from 1840 until 1916 when she was replaced by a ship! Today you can see evidence of these early days including several old stores still standing along Overseas Road No:1A! There are also some interesting architecture remnants such as the tower at nearby Fort Myer which served as an artillerynery during World War II!
