Lake Mary is a large, natural body of water in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from the Seminole word "mary," meaning blackwater. The lake was first surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1839 and named for General James K. Polk who was then United States Secretary of War (1845-1849). Inland, Lake Mary is bounded by Pinellas County to the north and east, Hillsborough County to the south, and Brevard County to the west. The surface area of Lake Mary is 147 square miles with a depth of 69 feet at its deepest point. The primary use of Lake Mary is for fishing but it also offers boating, swimming, and swimming/canoeing opportunities including excellent white bream fishing from its many impoundments along its course as well as largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish tournaments each year during the summer months when water temperatures are high enough for them to spawn. Lake Mary, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Fla., on the banks of the Kissimmee River. The community was founded in 1867 by David Brower and his family. By 1890, it had a population of seventy-five people. In 1907, Brower donated land to the city of Lake Mary for its incorporation as a municipality. The first mayor of Lake Mary was W. H. Kingdon. residents voted to name their town after George Washington in 1951. The town has since grown significantly and now has a population of over 1,200 people. Lake Mary was originally known as "Ponchatoula" because it sat on an ancientchanchastee (gift from Chief Ponchatoula) which empties into the river at this location In 1827 Major James Wilkinson built Fort Walton Beach on what is now State Road 9 near present day Polk City and named it Ponchatoula after his Indian friend Chahtoola who helped him find the area during his exploration of Florida On March 8, 1868, Ulysses S Grant visited LakeMary while he was traveling through Central Florida and ordered all available United States troops to encamp there until further notice due to concerns about Seminole activity east of Tampa Bay A few weeks later, he ordered General Thomas Jarratt to establish military posts throughout Central Florida including Fort Walton Beach so that American forces could protect settlers against Seminoles On July 3d1868 General Jarratt reported that no Seminoles were seen in or around Ponchartoula However rumors circulated throughout Mount Dora that some bandit chiefs had been sighted roaming near the fortifications so on July 12th General Jarratt ordered all men within 4 miles ofFort Walton Beach to assemble under arms at one place for drill This drill resulted in many casualties as Indians managed to sneak past American patrols and attacked unarmored transports driving them off shore From then until 1865 when US forces arrived in force they did not establish permanent installations within our limits but upon their departure various detachments continued quarters here until January 10th 1870 when order was given by Maj Gen Wofford Jr with headquarters at Pensacola Bay Area In 1867 David Brower moved from Philadelphia Pennsylvania with his wife and three children – Homer (age 6), Franklin (age 2) & Anna (aged 17 months). They set out from Baltimore Maryland aboard the brigantine "Ohio" bound for St Augustine FL via Mobile Alabama where they landed December 2nd1865 Afterlife experience similar my own Fathers before him! First time white folksset foot west side OFHOODLING ISLAND [sic] . . .
