The United States Air Force has a long and proud history in Lake Wales, Florida. The force was founded in 1947 as the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, and today it is one of the most powerful air forces in the world. The 1st TFW is responsible for providing Combat Support Squadron (CSS) 151 with fighter aircraft and training facilities to ensure their success on the battlefield. CSS 151 provides air support for military operations all over Southwest Florida. In 1990, CSS 151 was transferred from Orlando to Lake Wales and became part of 3rd Wing called 3rd Air Force based at Eglin AFB. In 2007, 3rd Wing moved to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam AFB where it still manages airspace over Hawaii. Today, 4th Wing also operates out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam AFB as a subordinate wing of 2nd Air Division which manages airspace over Guam and Japan. Additionally 2nd Air Division maintains an air defense mission throughout East Asia including South Korea
Lake Wales is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,954 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake Wales was named for Welsh explorer George Vancouver and his family who passed through the area in 1765 on their way to exploreFlorida's panhandle. They named it after their home island of Lewisland in Gwynedd, which they had seen while surveyng British Columbia. In 1819, Captain James Cook sailed into the Gulf of Mexico and saw what he thought was an island off shore called "Wales". He mistook it for Newfoundland because both islands were nearshore at that time. When he got back to England he wrote about his experience "I have never before seen or heard of such high mountains as this; they are very high indeed." Captain Cook renamed the island "Wales" after his home country because there were no other places with that name in British North America at that time. In 1905, Congress created Polk County from parts of Leon County and Wakulla County by splitting them off from Hillsborough County so that more people could be served without having to go through Hillsborough Township which was then part of Tampa Bayou District #2 (now Pinellas Park). At first Lake Wales consisted only of a few homes on Sunrise Boulevard where businesses used to located until 1950 when streets were completed linking all the homes around Sunrise Boulevard together making it one large community center with classrooms and parks being built on each side of Sunrise Boulevard between Morningside Drive and Golden Gate Parkway

Lake Wales, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake Wales was founded by settlers in 1881. The first post office was established in 1882. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Lake Wales after a major flood that swept through the area. Lake Wales is located on a small peninsula bordered by Kissimmee River on the east and north and Polk County on the west. The townsite covers an area of just over 0.7 square miles (1 km²). According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Lake Wales increased from 1,691 at the 2000 census to 2,898 at the 2010 census; this growth rate has continued through 2012 when it reached 3,003 according to unofficial estimates]. The population density is 909 people per square mile (321/km²). The climate here is mild Mediterranean with warm summers and cold winters with some snowfall each year sometimes as late as May or early June when temperatures plunge below zero degrees F (-18°C), but not always Freeze- Frame weather like you might find in much colder climates around North America or Europe where they experience extreme cold throughout winter even during summer months! Average high temperatures are usually in range from 80’s – 90’s while lows average around 50’s or 60’s all year long! Although we do have quite a few days annually where lows dip below 30 degrees Fahrenheit (−2°C), those days typically only happen during exceptionally severe thunderstorms which can get really abusive out there if you live near one! They named the area Santiago de Cuba after their captain, Pedro de Mena. In 1821, the United States acquired this territory from Spain and renamed it Jacksonville. The town of Lake Wales was founded in 1903 by entrepreneurs who wanted to develop the land around the lake. Lake Wales became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches and lush vegetation.
