There is no doubt that the army has been a significant part of Florida’s history and culture for many years. The first mention of an army unit stationed in Lake Wales comes from World War I when General John M. Pershing ordered 1st Cavalry Regiment to set up camp on Saunders Island in order to test new equipment. The unit was later renamed as the 103rd Infantry Regiment and served with distinction during World War II. The 103rd Infantry Regiment was also deployed to Vietnam where they fought alongside United States Marine Corps units until their withdrawal in 1975. The regiment played an important role at home during both world wars and continues to play a vital role in our society today by providing security, support and training to local law enforcement officers. In total, the 3rd Battalion of the 103rd Infantry Regiment has served throughout six wars- two world wars, two conflicts within the United States (Vietnam and Iraq), Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2006) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2008). Lake Wales, Florida is a small, isolated community located in Polk County, Florida on the west coast of Tampa Bay. The population was 1,451 at the 2000 census and it has since shrunk to 903.
