The Coast Guard has been providing security and assistance to the community in Lake Wales, Florida since 1941. Lake Wales, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 7,521 at the 2000 census and 8,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Lake Wales" is derived from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where the water flows abundantly." The first settlers in what is now Lake Wales were people who arrived in 1795 by ship from Canada. They named their new settlement after Welsh king George III's home country of England. The town grew slowly until it had a population of around 100 people by 1881 when railroad construction began nearby and people started to move into the area. In 1906, the town was incorporated as a municipality with a population of 5,500 residents. During World War II, Lake Wales played an important role in supplying troops with food and munitions for fight against Japan. After the war ended, many businesses opened up and the economy thrived thanks to tourism and trade opportunities that developed since then. In recent years, however, infrastructure development has begun to take hold which has led to some negative consequences for local businesses such as decreased traffic flow and slower economic growth due to increased costs associated with expanding services online instead of taking them offline during inclement weather conditions like Hurricane Irma or even more recently Hurricane Jose just weeks ago! In 1971, it was announced that Rear Admiral Gerald Cushing would succeed Commodore Dewey as Commanding Officer US Customs Service Fleet Pacific Area; this change marked the beginning of a new era for the Coast Guard when it became apparent that oceanographic research played an increasingly important role during this time period In 1982 Vice Admiral Jack Rinehart assumed command after Rear Admiral Cushing's retirement That same year saw another milestone when four officers were commissioned to serve aboard USS Constitution (CGN-38), becoming her first corpsmen That same year also saw enactment into law Publius 111-123 which designated Febuary 11th through 16th each year as National Coastal Patrol Week . This event marks both anniversary of Decatur’s founding as well as commemoration of 40 years since Coast Guardsman first responded to requests for help during Hurricane Betsy . In 1984 Commodore Harry Fenton assumed command after Vice Admiral Jack Rinehart left active duty He served until 1990 when he retired due to ageism within the military That same year saw establishment under Title 15 United States Code section 55101(a) , which authorizes gifts or donations made in memory or remembrance OF Members Of The Services killed OR missing IN THE LINE OF DUTY . On February 24th 1992 Captain Ronald Ladd resigned from his position commanding officer USCGC Polar Star (CG-68) after details were published about an incident involving his ship while underway off Beaumont Springs Texas ; this event led to then Superintendent James Wigmore issuing Order Number 827 entitled “Dedicate Vessels To Rescue Mariners” which recognized that seamen may feel isolated if their vessel cannot reach them quickly enough Furthermore these orders encouraged vessels owners/ operators etc.,to send out distress signals whenever they see any lifeboat activity ashore or afloat
