Lake Wales is a 2,324-acre (1,046-hectare) body of water located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Everglades National Park and was designated a national park in 1928. The population of Lake Wales was 927 at the 2000 census. The name "Lake Wales" comes from the Welsh word llan (dale), meaning 'valley'. At first glance it would seem that this valley formed where two small rivers came together to form the St Johns River. However when one looks closer they see that there are several valleys branching off from llan and each has its own stream flowing through it. It wasn't until 1795 when Captain John Cook discovered what he thought were two peninsulas lying between Pensacola Bay and the mainland called "Island aux Meadows". He named them Islay and Wightman's Peninsula after his friends Sir George Wightman and Colonel James Hunter who had donated land for the purpose. After surveys were made by Lieutenant Governor David Stuart in 1798-1800 it was decided that both Islay and Wightman's Peninsula should be included within French Creek Township so as not to duplicate resources with Fort Donelson on Pensacola Bay which had been under British control since 1692. In 1807 Spanish traders founded a trading post on what is now known as bayou Key west near present day Marathon because of their discoveries along St Johns River mouth about three miles wide opening into Tampa Bay - modern day Tampa – then only an island. A second post was established on bayou Willoughby next to today's Hillsborough County line north of downtown Tampa but this failed to thrive because no tradeable commodities could be found there other than seafood brought over by commercial boats or taken from Native American villages inland where fishing stocks were much greater. In 1809 Captain William Bainbridge explored estuary Stonington Sound which he called "Wakefield Sound" after Rear Admiral Alexander Wakefield who commandered HMS Erebus during her exploration of Antarctica in 1802-03 led by Commander George Fenton). After mapping many waterways including various bays and sounds he recommended that a new river be named for him based on his discovery - Gulf Stream current - Gulf Stream being said to originate near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina some 120 miles(240 kilometers) southeast of Jacksonville, Florida then flow generally NW parallel to US 1 before turning northeast towards Tallahassee, Florida crossing into Indian country just south of present day Cedar Key Beach before reaching its southern end at what is now Sarasota County near Sarasota Harbor just east of Sarasota Island - modern day Sarasota – less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Clearwater Harbor on Gulfstream Pass between Cutler Keys and Lido Key Islands – still part of Pinellas County today. On July 25th 1830 President James Kenedy signed Executive Order #4 creating Everglades National Park following complaints from local farmers about loss Of valuable freshwater fish due excessive development around Naples Bend Reservoir contaminating their wells with salt water; also reports about lack of proper education programs available for local children about environmental issues leading them to try catch wild game instead Of learning about natural systems especially those affecting their community such as wetlands/oceanography etc……….[continued]

Lake Wales, Florida is located in the state ofFlorida and has a population of over 153,000. The community was first established in 1892 as part of the Seminole Indian Reservation. In 1912, it was included in the newly created Polk County. Lake Wales is currently a census-designated place (CDP) and had a population of 138,711 as of 2019. In 1893, when Seminole Indians were removed from their reservation in central Florida and moved to what is now Polk County, they left behind two small lakes: "Titus" and "Lake Wales". Titus was renamed Lake Wales after Rear Admiral James S. Lockwood who commanded American forces during the Spanish-American War. The name stuck and today's residents refer to their community as "Lake Wales." Lake Wales experienced some growth during World War I due to its close proximity to Pensacola Naval Base which served as both an airfield for Allied bombers and a naval base for American warships. After the war ended, development slowed until the late 1920s when new subdivisions were developed around military bases like Pensacola Naval Station and Fort Walton Beach Naval Air Station. By 1930, there were over 100 businesses operating out of town with a population of just under 10,000 people. During the early years following World War II there was significant employment growth in aviation due to Pensacola Naval Air Station's role as an operational center for American pilots flying fighter planes into battle in Europe or Asia. Additionally, many workers brought their families back home to live near Penangya Airport on Orange Blossom Trail which became known as 'The Strip'. However, by 1960 only 9 percent of residents worked within town limits while more than 60 percent relied on outside sources for income including agriculture; industry; services; transportation; retail trade; tourism; agricultural production; natural resources such as oil wells and timberland
