They brought back two thousand pounds of coffee which they sold at a rate of $1 per pound. The first store was located on Second Street in what is now the town of Oviedo. In 1845, an advertisement for a coffeepot appeared in the "Florida Times-Union." A Mr. Hargrave opened his first store at Seventh Avenue and Bayou Road in Gainesville; it was destroyed by fire in 1895. By 1870, there were twenty-four stores selling coffee throughout Florida including one establishment located on Third Avenue and Bayou Road in Lake Wales also known as Hull’s Coffee House. In 1872, three men – Abraham Lincoln, James Kapp and George Wirtz – organized a company called "The Gators" to transport goods from Havana through Tampa to Martinique where they would be picked up by steamboats and then transported across the ocean by rail to Philadelphia where they would sell their products along Market street before returning home. It took eight days for one shipment of sixty-eighttons (two hundred fifty crates) of coffee to reach Tampa from Havana! In 1886, Jules Leduc established a small business near First Baptist Church along State Road 3014 about five miles south of Daytona Beach through which he shipped beans from his plantation near French Broad River including Ocala National Forest without having them inspected or marketing them as “high quality” coffees despite being labelled “grape seed pods” due to their size - these pods measured only 2 inches long x 1/2 inch wide x .25 inch thick). The first coffee house in Lake Wales was established by James Fenton and his wife, Sarah in 1867 on Elm Street. In 1886, Fenton opened the first grocery store in Lake Wales and continued to operate it until he passed away in 1957. The First National Bank of Lake Wales was also founded in 1886. After Fenton's death, his widow operated the store for several years before selling it to her son-in-law, George Hulse. In 1912, Hulse opened the first post office in Polk County and renamed it Lake Wales after her husband's birthplace on Long Island. In 1916, Jules Broudie joined Hulse as assistant manager of the store. By 1920, Broudie had become head manager and became sole owner of the business when Hulse died suddenly that year. From then on until 1987 when it changed hands again among various family members until being taken over by retail investors including Lowe's Companies Inc., Lakeside Coffee has been continuously open since then In 1984 Lakeside Coffee began making its own roast which they continue to make today with a focus on quality control and flavor consistency In 1998 Lakeside Coffee merged with two other local coffee businesses who were looking to expand their operations into central Florida - Premier Roasters (now Blue Bottle Coffee) and Donut Shop Coffee
