Lake Wales, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It lies on the western edge of the Osceola National Forest and is bordered by Orange County to the north and west, Hillsborough County to the east, and Lake Wales City to the south. The first settlers in what is now Lake Wales were French missionaries who came to Florida in 1763. They established a trading post near present day Lake Wales and named it St. John's Station after an early Spanish missionary who had been killed there. In 1821, Captain James Cook sailed past this site on his way from Britain to America with his men and took possession of land that includes today's Polk County. He called it "Cape Floridas" (now Cape Coral). In 1827, Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and appointed Colonel James Peebles as commander of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for duty along Bayport/Stuart River Road between Tampa Bay and Fort Myers Beach on Miami-Dade County Line effective 1 July 1827; this road became known as "Jackson Highway." Colored troops under General Pierce arrived at Stuart River Road during November 1830 resulted in white settlers fleeing into nearby Seminole Country In January 1833 an act was passed by Congress authorizing draining alligator holes around central lake area which created new land for farming This led to some hardship for those living along bayport/stuart river road as they could not access their property without paying high prices to have their roads improved . No such system ever materialized however because within a few years aqueducts were constructed from various rivers running through central lake area resulting in increased accessibility including electric streetlights throughout town
The area around Lake Wales, Florida was first settled by the Apalachee and Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. The area became a part of the United States after the American Revolution. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Lake Wales in 1832. By 1848, over 20 miles of road had been built through this region and development continued until the mid-19th century when a series of natural disasters caused an exodus of people from the area. One such event was the devastating Polk County tornado in 1851 which killed more than 100 people and left many others homeless.
