The area that would become Lakeland was first settled by Seminoles in 1827. At that time, it was known as "Tallahassee" because it was located on Tallahassee Bay. In 1886, a post office was established at what is now downtown Lakeland and mail service began between Tampa and Gainesville. In 1907, the state legislature designated land east of town as Township 7 South for white settlement and named it Lakeland Township after then-Governor Lecherens. By 1920, there were over 100 properties inLakeland Township with outbuildings scattered throughout much of present-day Polk County - making it one of the most suburban communities in Florida at that time. During World War II, military hospitals were constructed in town due to shortages within Tampa General Hospital which closed down following the war's end; these hospitals would become known locally as "the hospital complexes." Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 37,851 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 6, 1907 by J.C. Goodyear and W.H. Huddleston as a small citrus agricultural community named for Lakeland Lake which had been created by draining an area of swamp near what is now downtown Lakeland. The name may be derived from the Latin word lacustrum meaning "swampy". The locals were so pleased with the new town that they raised money to build a courthouse and jail, which were completed in 1912. A post office was established in 1911, and soon became one of the largest in Florida thanks to its location on the western edge of town and its large population of farmers who grew crops such as oranges, apples, cotton, potatoes, and corn. The first store opened in 1908 inside what is today's Civic Center building on SW Third Street just north of US-1/SR 192 (now part of SR 523). One year later, Jules Boggs opened his own store down the street on SW Fourth Street; it would become one of the most important stores in town until it closed its doors in 1958 due to lack of business revenue after World War II ended. In 1915 local school superintendent John Ladd founded two schools: Holy Cross Catholic School (later renamed Spring Hill Elementary) on SW Fifth Avenue (now NW Ninth Avenue) across from Mother Teresa’s Chapel and Clearwater High School (later renamed Lakeland High School), both located east off US 1/SR 192 southwest of downtown Lakeland proper within walking distance for all residents except those living southeast off First Street along SR 710; these students walked to Clearwater or took public transportation there from their homes each day A millinery business started up on NW Second Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Street around 1916 when Mrs Buchanan hired a woman named Millicent Hostetter to do some embroidery work for her customers at home using scraps she earned doing other tasks around the house while her husband worked at his construction company nearby. Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to what is now Lakeland were French Canadians who landed on the Florida Coast in 1692. They named it La Cité du Lac because of the large body of water that surrounded it then and still does. In 1837, General James Wilkinson granted a charter to a company of fur traders called The Company for the purpose of exploring and developing Seminole Territory east of Tampa Bay. A year later, this group founded an independent community called Eustis which was adjacent to modern-day Lakeland on a small bend in the St Johns River. In 1839, Eustis became known as Jacksonville after General Wilkinson's forces captured that city from Spanish Fort during their successful campaign against Mexico near present-day Clearwater Beach. On December 8, 1839, Jacksonville was reincorporated as City of Jacksonville with James Wilkinson as its first mayor. In 1841, he sold Jacksonville to Colonel John Troup and developer Nicholas Biddle for $2 million cash and 300 acres (1 km²) of land on what is now downtown Jacksonville This tract became known as "the patents". During Reconstruction Era (1865-1913), many African Americans moved into what is nowLakeland from eastern cotton plantations in South Carolina and Georgia due to remaining opportunities following Reconstruction while black people continued being discriminated against throughout much of America until well into the 21st century
