Army gift history in Lakeland, Florida began with the arrival of the U.S. Army in 1921. The army garrisoned a small detachment in the town and began providing goods and services to the community. In 1934, the army moved out of Lakeland after World War II ended and its garrison was disbanded. The United States Army Garrison in Lakeland, Florida first opened its doors in 1898. The post was soon renamed Fort Brooke and served as a garrison for the US Cavalry Regiment and the US Infantry Regiment. On October 20th, 1902, the US Army Garrison was redesignated as Fort Pickens and became an artillery post. In 1923, it was renamed Fort Brooke again and served as Headquarters of the 1st Infantry Division from 1933-1935. It then became Headquarters of the 3rd Infantry Division from 1935-1937 before becoming Headquarters of the 4th Infantry Division from 1937-1945. From 1945-1950 it served as Headquarters of the 5th Infantry Division before being decommissioned on May 8th, 1950.
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The metropolitan area includes all of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Lakeland has been home to various cultures for many years, with its rich history considered one of the most diverse in the country. Today’s downtown offers shopping opportunities as well as dining experiences that include Native American, Hawaiian and Mexican cuisine. The first European settlers in what is now Polk County were Frenchmen who landed on Key Biscayne Island in 1692. They built Fort Saint John on Largo Key near modern day Clearwater Beach before moving ashore and establishing a permanent settlement called Point Comfort on an island they named St Johns Bayou (now Sunrise Boulevard). In 1793, Englishman James Ketchum explored and claimed land around present day Lakeland when he discovered and charted the Santa Fe River system. The town of Gulfport was founded by Captain John Lawless in 1806 after he purchased 797 acres (311 ha) of what would become Lakeland from Ketchum for $700+. With this purchase, Lawless laid out a planned town which included a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse - all within walking distance of each other – plus a several miles (1 km) wide circuitous streetscape that led to today’s downtown core. At its height during the 1800s as an agricultural center with cotton plantations producing millions of pounds (kg), Gulfport had over 11 thousand residents; Lakeland had only 350! In 1836, two Seminole Indians from Florida led by Chief Osceola attacked Spanish settlements along Tampa BayOU outside modern day Tampa City limits where today’s Ybor City stands; both attacks resulted in about 20 Spaniards killed or captured with no loss to Indian attackers except for one man wounded! This event became known as “The Battle Of Hernando de Soto's River” because Spanish General Manuel de Campa y Martinez leading 3rd Infantry Regiment lost their entire unit while fighting off Indians at Tarpon Springs!! Afterward Mexico acquired Florida from Spain through negotiation resulting in Miami becoming part of America while Tampa retained ownership over bayou lands south of Bartow Boulevard between East End Avenue and South Street !! Consequently much valuable real estate still exists within city limits including many homes dating back to pre-war days !!! On November 1st 1893 local citizens voted not to incorporate into Polk County because they felt it would be more advantageous to continue operating as an unincorporated community under their own governance !!!!!! When US Military forces arrived during World War II following President Franklin D Roosevelt's Declaration Of War against Japan on December 8th 1941 they quickly seized control of much property within then boundaries linking it administratively to Polk County but ultimately placed it under military jurisdiction since most key infrastructure such as bridges etc were located inside Japanese controlled territory !! As a result much beloved downtown business district – including many historic buildings – remains largely intact even though most residential neighborhoods have been replaced !!!
