The first permanent settler in what is now Lakeland was Manuel de Quiros, who arrived in 1793 and named it after his family's estate near Barcelona, Spain. In 1837, A. Fenton changed the name to "Lakeland" because he thought it would be more attractively written than "Volusia". The town began to grow rapidly during the 19th century as farmers brought their crops to market and citrus production increased. In 1887, voters passed a zoning ordinance that allowed for single-family homes and independent businesses within a certain radius of each other. This led to the development of shopping centers around downtown Lakeland and new subdivisions further out into rural areas. By 1922, there were over 100 businesses in town and an estimated population of 3,000 people. During World War II, Lakeland played an important role as both an airfield and munitions plant. More than 2 million gallons (7 million liters) of gasoline were processed here between 1942 and 1945 alone! After Hurricane Flora struck Florida on September 29th 1991,[1] much activity stopped due to fear that property damage could reach unprecedented levels if left unchecked by normalgomentaries like power outages or flooding.[2][3] As a result of this emergency response effort by local municipalities across Polk County (and adjacent Lee County), many buildings were saved from total destruction but entire neighborhoods suffered devastating losses including homes uprooted from foundations or torn apart by winds up to 140 mph (225 km/h).[4][5] Many residents registered with FEMA for blood donations drives hours before landfall;[6][7] however transportation shortages precluded large scale Collecting Centers like those commonly found along California coastlines due to lack of available vehicles or equipment; instead residents collected water bottles from convenience stores or ran into cars when necessary for distribution inland through Tallahassee proper[8]. In 1840, Fenton sold the town to two brothers, Moses and Elijah Strong. The Strongs renamed the town Lakeland after their home state of Alabama. The growth of Lakeland slowed during the Civil War but resumed after Reconstruction ended in 1865. During the 1920s and 1930s, lakefront development increased as tourism became a dominant force in the area. Today, Lakeland is a small city with a population of around 50,000 people.
