That parcel included all present-day downtown and parts of north-central neighbourhoods such as Winters Park and Highlands Park east of US 1/US 301/SR 511 (now Lemon Grove). Ewing donated another acre (30 hectares) to the town for public use; this tract currently contains Eastern Hills Golf Club and adjacent residential communities south of SR 511 between Lemon Grove Road and Hammonds Parkway East

In 1868, Jno. Pemberton built a dam across Clearwater River and named the resulting community after Colonel John C. Smith (1793-1867), an American general who had fought in Mexico and been aidede camp to President James K. Polk during its Reconstruction era (1865-1869). In 1886, Lorenzo Price donated 330 acres (1 km²) adjacent to his plantations near present day Eustis Boulevard and US 1 for use as a public park called Price Park (now part of US 1). George Washington Williams donated 100 acres (40 hectares) known as Williams tract No. 2 along US 1 east of town limits in 1907 and named it after himself. Lakeland became a municipality on December 12, 1924 with a population of 4,521 residents when parts of current Daymond Beach were annexed by the municipality while still under Houston's jurisdiction
Lakeland was founded in 1834 by James K. Polk, during the Mexican-American War. The town was named for General Wilkinson Lake, who fought in that war. In 1866, the county of Osceola was created from parts of Seminole and Walton counties, and Lakeland became its capital. In 1928, the city of Lakeland annexed the towns of Dunnellon and Westlake to its boundaries. On November 1, 1932, the city of Gainesville merged with Lakeland to form a single municipality.
