It is the largest city in Miami-Dade County and part of the Miami metropolitan area. It borders Miami to the south and west, Pompano Beach to the north, and Biscayne Bay to the east. The first coffee plantations were established in Lakeland by Spanish colonists in 1795. In 1800, John Fenton began producing coffee beans for American merchants in Key West. Lakeland is located on the St. Johns River, just south of its confluence with the Caloosahatchee River. The area that now comprises Lakeland was first settled by Native American peoples as far back as 600 BC. By 1800, citrus fruit had been planted and by 1820 it was known as "The Citrus Capital of America." A post office called "Lakeland" was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1840, Captain John Stonington arrived onshore to found what would become Lakeland after landing on a shoal near present-day Hollywood Boulevard and US 19W (now SR 913). He named it after his home town—Lizard Island—in England. In 1845, he sold much of what is now Polk County to James Sawaya for $2 million in money which he used to purchase 640 acres (240 ha) of land around present-day downtown Lakeland from Andrew Jackson Donelson for $10 an acre ($4/ha). After becoming lieutenant governor, Polk traveled throughoutFlorida looking for land for a new state capital.
