Lakeland is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Cordova Micropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Lakeland was founded by two brothers in 1892 as a small community on the west side of the St Johns River. A post office and school were opened in 1893, and by 1907 it had grown to include a grocery store, three hotels and 12 frame houses. In 1927 it became an incorporated municipality with a full city government under one mayor and four commissioners. The first municipal election held in Lakeland was on November 7, 1927. In 1932 Mayor Harry Naylor merged the towns of Dunnellon to form one municipality with a population of over 2,000 people; this merger also resulted in the creation of Escambia County's only other town—Dunnellon—and its incorporation into Lakeland on December 16 that year. As part of Escambia County's efforts to attract businesses to its area during the 1930s and 1940s, Municipal Court Judge Harvey Sargent convinced several developers to build dams along the St Johns River which would create new floodplains around present-day Lakeland (the first such dam was built near present day Petty Motors Headquarters). This development led to some changes in demographics within Lakeland: from an almost entirely white working-class neighborhood early on in its history to today's predominately Hispanic residential areas east of Highway 95A

In 1861, following the American Civil War, Lakeland became part of the Confederate States of America and was known as "The Confederacy's Capital."
