Lakeland is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,627 at the 2000 census. It lies along State Road 441 south of Fort Gaines and north of Lakeland proper. The communities that make up the incorporated town of Lakeland were all founded by white men who came to the area in the early 1800s. The town began as a farming community with a few small businesses and a single school. In 1892, though, construction began on what would become the first phase of what would become known as "the City." The city was enlarged over time and by World War II had reached its current size. Today, it is home to more than 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. The history of Lakeland goes back even further than that though. One of the first Native American groups to live in this area were the Seminole people who arrived around 1795. After several years they decided to move westward again and set up shop near modern day Sanford which they named "Toccoa". A year later another group called the Creek Indians arrived and after some fighting settled down on a small island adjacent to Clearwater Bay in what is now downtown Lakeland. This site became known as Fort Toccoa because Indian Chief Toccoa defended it from attack by Spanish forces during Florida's sugarcane revolution (1810-1815). In 1827, when Tampa was established as a state capital, Fort Toccoa reverted back to its original name - Clearwater Bay Naval Station - but it remained an active military base until 1959 when it was decommissioned due to budget cuts following America's entry into World War II. During much of its history Clearwater Bay Naval Station served as an important naval base for both short range combat operations (such as carrying out airstrikes) and long range bombardment missions against Japanese targets located in Cuba and Japan itself during World War II; most notably Operation Crossroads which resulted in Hiroshima being bombed from within –Operation Mockingbird being one such operation targeting Tokyo’s Kanto District specifically). Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,101 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The name "Lakeland" comes from the Seminole word lakehala meaning “swampy place”. The first settler in what is now Lakeland was James Waddell who arrived in 1821 and named his new land for General Jonathan C.","Waddell's Swamp." Waddell's swamp was located near present day Volusia Avenue and Orange Blossom Road on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. In 1827, George Rogers Clark founded what is now Winter Park on land that he bought from Waddell. At first Clark called his new community "Winter Garden". When it became apparent that a town could not be established until water supply problems were solved,Clark changed the name to "Lakeland". In 1859, J. Murchison built a steamboat dock at what is now US 1st Street and I-Drive in order to welcome tourists to his newly developed village which had sprung up around him since he purchased the dock site from missionaries working for the Episcopal Church of America (EOCA). By 1870, when US 1st Street crossed Orange Blossom Road east of Lake Okeechobee into Polk County proper,Murchison had created an agricultural center with four stores and 10 homes serving more than 4200 residents living on 640 acres (252 hectares) includinglying along both banks of Orange Blossom Road—the most extensive commercial development anywhere in Florida during this period." The first post office in Lakeland opened on April 12th 1865 under the name Winter Garden by John Hargrave with EOCHA as its local patron saint. On November 15th 1886 Samuel Morse opened a store at 204/206 N Main Street which became one of America's earliest Sears & Roebuck department stores before moving out toSpringdale Boulevard across US 19 some years later. On July 5th 1912 Everard Roe opened another store at 111 S Main Street which became one of only two general merchandise stores open in downtown Lakeland until 1978 when it closed due to financial troubles.........................................In 1961 Duval County reconstructed all county roads starting at UConn Drive heading north then west then northwest then south then east just like Springdale Boulevard did back then.....................On December 20th 1955 City Council adopted Resolution No.(1), designating Christmas as National Holiday
