The area that would become Lakeland was first settled by Seminole Indians in what is now Leon County on the lower Apalachicola River in 1794. By 1836, the area had been incorporated as part of Tallahassee and growing demand for cotton plantations caused its growth to parallel that of Tallahassee. In 1907, Lakeland became one of two cities in Florida designated to be twin towns with neighboring Tampa by then-Governor Manuel L. Young. In 1959, it annexed land from Stonington to form a new city and began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on state Highway 8 which became I-4 after Interstate Highway 10 was completed through Polk County in 1969: It saw an influx of businesses and people looking for easier access to more jobs in an ever-growing region. The city experienced a huge influx of refugees during World War II when over 60% of its citizens were either service or civilian personnel who lived or worked within five miles (8 km) of Fort Walton Beach military base which housed over 24000 troops and sailors who engaged on all fronts including amphibious assaults off shore against numerically stronger Japanese ships and submarines; airfields bombing targets inland; navy yards building battleships; dams construction; chemical warfare experiments; flood control projects; public works projects such as widening streets, erection of retaining walls around lakeshores, installationof storm sewers and water systems etc.; numerous shopping centers built for servicemen’s families who made way for larger stores opened by local merchants catering especially to civilians living near bases housing millions more dollars worth military hardware…. In 1868, the town became a county seat and was renamed Lakeland. The county was created in 1889 and it merged with Seminole County in 1907. On November 5, 1935, Lakeland lost its charter as a county because of its lack of economic development. It gained it back on February 3, 1936 when it annexed part of Hillsborough County.
