During this time period much progress was made for both cities including the construction of two new public halls: One on North Main Street and one on East State Street near Central Library—the first ever built in central Florida! Additionally, many new businesses were opened up during this time including several churches (Stroudsburg Baptist Church being the first), an ice cream parlor/convenience store (Baker's Ice Cream Parlor) and two convenience stores (Kmart and Shell). Today these businesses still operate as separate entities but are all part of the same family - Baker's Ice Cream Parlor! Lakeland was founded by settlers from Ohio in 1836 and became a prosperous agricultural community with a temperate climate and fertile soil. In the early 21st century, much of the commercial district around downtown had been destroyed by arson, but development has resumed in recent years with new businesses opening up along US 1A and US 6A. The nucleus of what would become Lakeland was first settled by pioneers from Ohio in 1836 when they came to what is now Miami-Dade County looking for land to purchase near Clearwater on the Gulf of Mexico. The original settler's cabin still stands today at 4651 Northwest First Street. The town name comes from an Indian word meaning "safe haven." In 1837 one of the early settlers, John White, organized a local militia company to help suppress piracy off the coast of Florida during the Seminole Wars (1835–1839). At that time there were no police forces other than those provided by private individuals or militias which often proved inadequate against larger bands of raiders and pirates who operated in ungoverned areas nearby. To provide efficient law enforcement service within its own boundaries Lakeland formed itself into a municipality on February 14th, 1839 under legislation approved by then-Governor James Overseer. During its formative years Lakeland experienced some natural disasters such as devastating hurricanes (Ft Myers 1893; Palm Beach 1898) and several floods including that which devastated Chickasaw Key in 1915 while also resulting in extensive damage to homes and crops downstream from Creek Bend Dam on Loxahatchee River Despite these setbacks it continued to grow economy through agriculture activities such as raising chickens, pigs, horses and cattle until World War II when mainstay industry shifted towards defense production due to strategic location on two coasts opposed by enemy forces stationed elsewhere across America like Texas or California During this time most residents used their connections within government or business entities for patronage appointments instead of seeking elected office thereby preserving their influence over decision making process going forward Instead many residents absenteeism grew rampant citing social engineering tactics employed by various political subdivisionsLensport Business Improvement District (BIRD), City Manager position being one example although lack thereof curtailed economic opportunity

Lakeland was founded in 1837 by Andrew Jackson Davis and named for him after his estate on the Blanchard River. In 1885, a new town called West Lakeland was platted on land east of present-day Lakeland. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1907. In 1928, it merged with neighboring East Lakeland to form what is now known as Lakeland–East Lakeland Combined Statistical Area. On January 1, 2009, East Lakeland–Lakeland Combined Statistical Area became a separate city by ordinance passed by the City Council under then-Mayor Jeff Smith's leadership.
