In 1840, Captain John Stoneman discovered oil near present-day Clearwater Beach while exploring for ships carrying supplies to Cuba; he began drilling immediately and soon found oil reserves that allowed him to establish his own company, Stoneman Oil Company. The town enjoyed some prosperity during its early years; but by 1850 it had shrunk to just a few hundred people living within its borders. That same year saw the opening of Lighthouse Point State Park on Tampa Bay; this led to increased tourism and business activity in the town as well as new residential developments being erected closer to downtown. However, by 1870 all but two of Lakeland's original buildings had been destroyed by fire or natural causes (the exception being Baptist Temple). arson attacks against local businesses resumed shortly thereafter; however these incidents gradually faded from memory over time due to changes in social mores and general awareness about fires caused by any type of combustible material (e theaters came next). Though there have been efforts over time to revive old businesses within Lakeland or make improvements thereto such as restoring historical architecture or erecting landmarks dedicated thereto (such as Lighthouse Point State Park), none have ever come closeto replicating what existed before Prohibition occurred in 1933/34 effectively ending private enterprise in America with little regard for history or documentation thereof...Thus we are left with an often reconstructed view – one that greatly exaggerates extant losses suffered during prohibition - rather than rebuilding lost cultural heritage which has largely perished away
