Lakeland, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,610 at the 2010 census. It is the cultural and economic center of Polk County and the county seat of Lakeland. The area that now comprises Lakeland was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 17th century. A small community called "Natchez" was founded about 1820 on what is now US-1 east of town. A post office called Natchez was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1901. In 1845 developer James Mims organized a group of investors to purchase land north of Tampa for development into an agricultural center known as Mimsville Township. On May 8, 1846 Mims submitted a plat to the state of Florida for approval to build a town on what is now US-1 in Polk County. The name "Lakeland" came from one of the investors in this early effort to develop land hereabouts - John Crouch - and it was chosen as the site for his new town due to its accessibility by water (it lay on an indentation between two lakes). Mimsville quickly became a busy commercial center with grain elevators, sawmills, cotton plantations,and other businesses emerging across several blocks near downtown. By 1865 it had acquired its own school system and police department; by 1870 it boasted over 100 homes! The pace accelerated after 1870 when transportation improvements made travelling around Polk County more convenient – passenger trains began running through Lakeland from Tampa Bay each day end allowing farmers access to market prices for their crops while also providing necessary urban amenities like shopping centers and hospital services close at hand should something happen during transit times or outages – which happened quite often given Old Tampa's then-unparalleled infrastructure capabilities back then! Township boundaries were set by the Florida Territorial Legislature in 1821 and have not changed since then. They are as follows: north to Jacobi Creek; east to Indian River; south to Gulfstream; and west to Lakeland Bayou. The name "Lakeland" comes from a Seminole word meaning "the great water". The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakeland were Spanish explorers who landed there on November 14, 1565, during their expedition led by Hernando de Soto. In 1821, the Florida Territorial Legislature established township limits which remain unchanged today. North of Jacobi Creek lay land that would become South Walton County and east of Indian River belonged to Stonington County while Gulfstream went into Jackson County. West of Lakeland Bayou lay what would become Polk County and much of it lies within present-day Lakeland Township including parts of downtown Jacksonville which was founded in 1834 as a result of annexation by Lakeland from Jackson County
Lakeland was founded in 1837 by J.B. Polk, the brother of Florida's first governor, James K. Polk. The town was named for the large body of water that surrounded it at the time. The area around present-day Lakeland had been inhabited by Seminole and Creek Indians for generations before Spanish missionaries arrived in the area in the early 1800s to proselytize Christianity. In 1837, Polk donated $5,000 to establish a school in what is now downtown Lakeland and laid out a township on land he had acquired east of Tampa Bay. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1851, Polk bought 4,500 acres (1 km2) of what is now Polk County from Ayer Troup for $10 per acre (0.50 per km²). By 1870, Polk County had a population of 20,000 people and two churches: St John's Episcopal Church on Tampa Bay and First Methodist Church on Morningside Heights near downtown Lakeland. In 1861, General Ulysses S Grant became president of the United States and ordered Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House south of Petersburg,. On April 9th 1865, Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House after Major General Robert Ewell failed to capture him alive as planned
