The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Lantana, Florida in December 1949. The gift was an air force plane, the A-26 Invader. This aircraft was donated by the USAAF and flew into service with the 93rd Fighter Wing at MacDill AFB, FL. The 93rd Fighter Wing is a unit of the Air National Guard. The A-26 Invaders were not only a beautiful aircraft but also an important part of USAF history. They served as bombers and reconnaissance planes until they were retired in 1978. During their time with the 93rd Fighter Wing, these planes helped shape American aviation for many years to come. The town has a population of about 1,500 people and is home to the Lantz Museum, which tells the story of Lantz's citrus industry and other aspects of local history. The name "Lantana" comes from an old Seminole word meaning "little lily." In 1881, J.C. Lantz purchased land at the mouth of the St Johns River in what is today Lantana. He named his plantation after its namesake - an old Seminole word meaning "the little lily." The first crops were planted on this property in 1882 and by 1886, Lantz had developed a successful orange orchard that yielded over 2 million pounds of fruit per year!
