Lantana was founded by English-born settlers in 1885 as a citrus plantation near present-day Hollywood. His father had immigrated from Lancashire England some twenty years earlier and started a small farm near present day Hollywood called "Pinecrest" which he sold off some time before moving east to look for land better suited for agriculture than Flagler Beach where he had settled with his family four years earlier. As early as 1886 there were reports of pests attacking oranges being grown around this area making transportation difficult so early colonists turned to importing diseased fruit trees back home from Europe as new technology improved methods of harvesting fruit trees hereabouts such as maceration followed by cold storage before packing into crates for shipment back home; this process continued until well into the 1920s This eventually led to many sick or dead oranges being exported back here; however some enterprising farmers did manage to adapt their techniques over time resulting in increased yields while reducing pest problems

In 1925, the name of the town changed to Lantana when it became part of Lake County. A school opened in 1927 and remained in operation until 1957. The community experienced economic decline during the 1950s because of competition from larger towns such as Gainesville and Tallahassee.
