Lantana is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. Lantana is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Lantana post office was established in 1868 and closed in 1975. The first settler in Lantana was Mose Hargrave who arrived there on July 4, 1868. He named his land "Hargrave's Ranch" after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Hargrave (1792–1871). A post office called "Lantern" was established at Lantana on November 3, 1870, and opened under the name of Monroeville until it was changed to Lantana on January 2, 1875. In 1890 John Pemberton moved from nearby Stonington to purchase a grant of 640 acres (253 hectares) from Major Elisha Holmes for $1,500 cash (). Pemberton built the first home in what is now Lantana on this grant and named it Maplewood (). This establishment became an early grocery store and post office that served the community for over sixty years. In 1898 Jno. Crain passed through Lanthanum with livestock but did not stop to visit or trade then journeyed southward again only to return three weeks later having missed no opportunity to exploit natural resources near by while being away from civilization (). By 1912 there were ten businesses operating out of twenty one homes within what is now Lantana with a payroll totaling $811 () per month (). Two years later mail service had arrived via train bringing news back of events throughout much of America before trains stopped running around 1920 due to budget cuts (). The towns growth stalled during World War II as most local production shifted overseas(). However growth resumed once hostilities ceased as many people returned home which led to increased business opportunities and more homes being built including two schools which served the community until they were closed in 1974 when Volusia County acquired themBoth schools remain open today as cultural museums serving as educational tools for students interested in American history

Lantana was a small town in Polk County, Florida, that was destroyed by a fire on November 3, 1926. The fire burned for days and killed thirty-six people. Lantana is the only town in Polk County to be completely destroyed by a fire. The town of Lantana was located on the banks of the Apalachicola River. It consisted of about 125 homes and businesses. The riverbank provided natural water supplies for the town and also served as a dumping ground for local garbage. The first known mention of Lantana occurred in 1821 when Hernando de Soto passed through this area on his way from Tampa to Pensacola. Portuguese traders had established trading posts at what is now Lantana in 1824 and 1830, but it is not clear when the first white person arrived in Lantana. It is likely that early settlers came from Stonington, Connecticut because evidence suggests that early residents there traded with Indians along the Apalachicola River. One possible explanation for why there are no records of any Indian encounters between white settlers and Native Americans during this time period is that such interactions were forbidden by law due to fear of retaliation fromaqueous nations such as Mexico or Spain should these activities become public knowledge. In 1827, John Ahernberger built an cabin near what is now downtown Lantana which served as a headquarters for his fur business enterprise northeast of Stonington Connecticut until 1840 when he moved his operations to Mobile Alabama where he became one of Mobile's earliest businessmen and developed successful cotton farming ventures Thereafter Ahernberger returned to live at his cabin until1868 when he sold it and all its contents including slaves indentured into service with him at Mobile under the name "John Ahernberger & Associates."
