As the world’s oldest coast guard service, the Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and maritime support to coastal communities for more than a century. Today, the Coast Guard offers a wide range of services including marine rescue and search and recovery, environmental monitoring, traffic control and obstruction prevention. The Coast Guard also provides educational resources to help citizens understand their community’s maritime environment. The history of the Coast Guard in Lantana County began in 1903 when local fishermen requested that the military provide them with protection from Spanish pirates. In 1912, Captain Robert Haines organized a group of volunteers from Lantana to patrol the county’s coastline. In 1933, Captain James Ahern founded Station Gulf Beach onshore at Bay Road in Lantana Cove as part of the efforts to keep shipping safe during an economic depression. In 1941, Station Gulf Beach was renamed Station Mote Marine near Point Conception after Commanding Officer Lt. Commander Edward Mote who had played an important role in its development. The following year,Captain Harry Prentice established Station Eagle Bluff on Gadsden Island which functioned as both a weather station and aid station to other stations along the coast during World War II. In 1948,Captain John Fenton replaced Captain Harry Prentice as Commanding Officer at Eagle Bluff Station and began developing plans for expanding Service operations into south Florida which would include Base Miami Beach on Biscayne Bay and St Petersburg-Clearwater Harbor aboard USS Constitution (LST-206) . After years of planning and fundraising by members of Congress, Service personnel arrived in Miami on March 20th 1949 with portions of Base Miami Beach permanently occupied less than two weeks later when USS Constitution sailed into Port Everglades under cover of darkness with 1st Lt., Don Armstrong commanding Section 3rd Marines aboard USS Osprey (AGS-5). From that point forward Service activities were conducted outlandishly ashore not just at our beach but also adjacent offshore islands such as Santa Rosa Key where we constructed dwellings for our enlisted men while they awaited permanent housing elsewhere on Biscayne Bay; Ft Myers; Naples; Sarasota; Jupiter-Bradenton Airport ; Clearwater Harbor On October 9th 1957 Headquarters moved from San Diego back to Miami after more than 40 years away due to budget cuts within Defense Department directives which affected all Federal Agencies save only Military Police - Curiously enough this relocated Headquarters coincided exactly with Navy Weeks end celebration - days before President Eisenhower announced his decision publically not to seek reelection . On November 5th 1957 there were ceremonies held throughout Region VIII consisting primarily civilian representatives led by Mayor Hughes attended by Rear Admiral JT Day Jr.(Retired)(Commanding UDT/CGV) USN Retired serving 4 terms mayor since taking office December 14 th 1959 through present day General Accounting Office report dated January 25 th 1960 found no evidence City officials misled or withheld information from United States Government regarding proposed Naval Landing Facility at Plantation Key - continuing Presidential Executive Order No 12337 creating Joint Services Offshore Installation Authority superseded any prior governmental action

The Lantana Coast Guard Station was established in 1941 and is one of the oldest Coast Guard stations in Florida. The station's mission is to provide law enforcement services on the Gulf of Mexico and its adjoining waters.
Lantana is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lantana is known for its Lantana Gardens and as the home of the Lantana Speedway oval track. The area that now comprises Lantana was first settled by Seminole Indians in 1794 and named for a tree called "Lantanas". In 1836, James A. Kightlinger sold 640 acres (247 hectares) of what are now Lantana Gardens to John Pemberton. The land had been purchased from Spanish settlers who had abandoned it during their war with American forces in 1813-1814. In 1860, Kightlinger sold another 472 acres (247 hectares) to Ezra Crainworth and his son Amos Crainworth Jr.. This parcel became known as "Kightlinger's Garden" after Mr. Kightling's brother-in-law, Jnoe Gibbs Kightlinger. In 1862, Wm Troup bought 780 acres (309 hectares) from Mr. Crainworth and donated it to the citizens of Polk County as a public parkland named after him on November 12th 1865. Kirtland Fenton Cockerell donated additional land for the park on October 3rd 1875 which included 300 feet (91 metres) of beach frontage on Sarasota Bayou between Longwood Avenue and Gulf Boulevard in today's east side of town on land that he had bequeathed to Congresswoman Lucy Stone! On April 14th 1889 Reverend Harry Emerson Fenton established First Baptist Church located at 319 N US Hwy 494 in present day Lantana as one half mile north of intersection of Longwood Ave./Gulf Boulevard/US Hwy 494 - giving rise to current name & church building! A post office was established at Lantana on December 2nd 1893; however it closed due to lack of mail service! On January 10th 1899 mail service arrived via railroad from Tampa Bay! On February 15th 1899 First Baptist Church burned down but soon rebuilt! The new church building opened November 9th 1903 with Revs Harry Emerson Fenton and John Wesley Hardwick officiating
The Coast Guard has been providing security and rescue services since the early 1800s. In 1853, Congress passed an act to create the Coast Guard by merging the various fishing vessels of different states. The first coast guard vessel was built in 1857 at Newport, Rhode Island. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that created the Coast Guard as a separate service with jurisdiction over all coastal waterways in America. The first rank for a coast guard officer was Lieutenant Commander. The present rank structure for coast guard officers is Captain. Coast guard vessels are propelled by sails and have an endurance of around 50 knots (73 mph). The Coast Guard does not have any military branches and does not operate aircraft or missiles. Instead, it relies on volunteer sailors and aircrew to provide its emergency services including search and rescue, security patrols,and law enforcement support near land or water boundaries. All members of the Coast Guard must be U.S citizens who meet certain qualifications such as being a high school graduate orveteran status with two years maritime experience at sea or serving in the national armed forces during wartime time period

Lantana was founded in 1848 by John H. Lantz and his brother, George Lantz. The name comes from the Lantana palm tree, which grows plentifully in the area. The first post office at Lantana was opened in 1851. By 1861, the town had a population of about fifty people. Lantana experienced some growth during World War II as it became an important airbase for the Allies. The town also saw development in the early 1960s when it became home to Florida State University's Palm Beach Campus and then again starting in the 1990s with new businesses opening up throughout the community. Since its incorporation as a city in 1957, Lantana has made significant strides forward including becoming one of Florida's fastest-growing cities with a population increase of over 25%. In 2013, its mayor announced plans to make Lantana one of Jacksonville's "smart" communities that would promote sustainable planning and green infrastructure initiatives within its borders.
