Lantana is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. Lantana is located on State Road 613 southwest of Clearwater and east of Stonington. It is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lantana was George Kessler who arrived in 1848. Lantana may have been named for an early Loyalist military officer, Captain John Lantz (1768-1834), who served with distinction during the Seminole Wars and later fought against Seminole Chief Osceola in 1810. Major General James Wilkinson called for Colonel Thomas Gadsden's brigade to march from Tampa to attack Spanish Fort Moultrie on January 15, 1814; but instead of coming they marched into Indian Territory and were never seen again. In 1865, A H Dorman started a lumber business that produced some of the earliest logs in this area. In 1907, Waddell Bros., a hardware store and grocery store became one of the first businesses in Lantana when it opened on Court Street near US 87/SR 601 (now SR 620). From there until its closing in 1978, Waddell Bros.'s customers included many Floridians who either worked or lived close by Okeechobee Naval Station which made access to groceries difficult or impossible without traveling far away each time. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,569 people residing in the town: 543 households out of which 36% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21% of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. Lantana was a small town in St. Johns County, Florida, that was founded by the Holland family in 1876. The town was named for Lantana Creek, which empties into the St. Johns River near Fort Fisher. Lantana had a population of about 100 people at its peak in 1920 and declined after World War II until it disappeared entirely during the Barry-White Era in the late 1940s. The first settlers to Lantana were James and Betsey Holland, who came from Holland, Michigan. In 1876, James and his brother John moved from Lansing Township to what is now Lantana and started a farm there. They raised pigs, cows, chickens and corn. The Holland brothers also built a sawmill on their farm which produced lumber for local homes and businesses.
