Lantana is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census. Lantana is part of the Broward-Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. It is bordered by Royal Palm Beach to the east, Pembroke Pines to the north, Boca Raton to the west and Lauderhill to the south. Lantana began as a trading post on what is now Lantana Boulevard on November 5th, 1836 by prospectors from Santa Fe who named it for Lathan (a large palm tree). Waddell of Stonington arrived with his steamer "Osprey" and took over local shipping which had been done by Indians until then. From 1865 until 1889Captain Waddell ran an Exchange Telegraph Office out of his store which served both Lantana and Fort Pierce Callahan Post Office until 1918 when that office was moved to Pompano Beach The first church in Lantana was built in 1875 by Rev. Fenton Grahams along with land donated by Captains Aiken and Weller who also owned some of the early sugar plantations near Clearwater Key on Biscayne Bay It was not until 1886 that a school house was built which later became known as First Baptist Church . In 1906 a two story addition was added giving it its present appearance In 1912 hurricane Andrew destroyed part of downtown but did not damage or kill any people or property A new shopping center opened up in 1961 called "The Park Plaza". It included four large malls with 12 stores including Sears department store When it closed down in 1992 it had 15 stores including Sears and JCPenney among others
