Lantana was founded in 1901 by two brothers, Edwin and Willard Lantana. The location was a swampy area near the intersection of US-1 and FM 447. The brothers built a log cabin and started farming. In 1906, they married Anna Mae Bigham and began to plant cotton. The Lantanas ran a small grocery store until 1913 when their son, Johnnie, took over the business. In 1916, they bought land at what is now US-1/FM 447 junction for $2,000. They named their new farm Lantana Farms after their mother's birthplace in Louisiana. After four years of hard work and many sacrificed hours farming the land, Edwin Lantana died suddenly in 1922 from an illness that had no cure. Anna Mae continued to run the farm until her death in 1930; Johnnie assumed full ownership of the property upon her death. Lantana Farms grew rapidly due to its good soil quality and marketing characteristics: it had high yields for cotton (up to 100 lbs/acre), excellent fiber quality (light brown), high resistance to pests and diseases, as well as low distance between plants; furthermore, it could be grown both year-round and during short bursts of drought or frost while still yielding crops of large size (> 2 acres). In 1928, Anna Mae's nephew Vinton Herrington purchasedAnna Mae's share in the farm for $8500 - making him facto owner of all assets on Lantana Farms including title deeds/rights to produce Cotton on Site Agreements with other producers located within 500 feet radius.)
