Lantana, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Lantana is located on the St. Johns River about 12 miles (19 km) east of Jacksonville and 14 miles (23 km) west of Gainesville. The first settler in what would become Lantana was John C. Loggins in 1892. A post office called Lantana was established in 1895, and remained in operation until 1925. The name comes from a type of palm tree that grew abundantly along the riverbank hereabouts: "Lanthandra occidentalis". In 1907, businessmen Harry Waddell and Eben Guthrie built a sawmill on the banks of the St Johns River at present-day Lantana; this mill remain operational to this day as G&H Sawmills LLC. In 1913, Harry Waddell donated land to build a golf course which became known as War Memorial Golf Course today. The town's population increased rapidly during World War II due to wartime production shortages brought about by the warring countries involved in World War II: Nazi Germany and Japan. A small community hall was constructed for use by all residents of Lantana during World War II; it burned down after only four months of use because no one could afford to maintain it adequately. A new small community hall/library building was constructed adjacent to the old Community Hall in 1951; it still functions as an annex to the library today (). Afterward, though there were sporadic efforts over ensuing years by some local citizens to establish shopping malls or other economic development projects within or near Lantanians boundaries - all without success - commercial fishing industry employment growth continued unabated through much of the 1970s and 1980s due largely to larger coves within Jacksonville's vicinity becoming available for fishing due increasingly high levels of water quality improvements resulting from then-new state environmental regulations spelled out specifically with respect to fishing operations - culminating with enactment into law by then-Governor Lawless following his re-election as governor that year ( resultant passage also establishing Florida's first ever state Environmental Protection Act ) - most residents instead embarked upon more general types of agricultural pursuits such as raising chickens or pigs etc., although overall tourism opportunities continue generally lower than those enjoyed originally decade ago when many visitors had simply not yet discovered what lay just offshore their shores since so little else had changed since relatively large portions now lay beneath feet spanning entire width ashore !
