Lantana is a small town located in north-central Florida, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. Lantana is part of the Tallahassee–Treasure Coast Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lantana, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. Lantana is one of the oldest American towns in the state and has been around since 1892. It is named after Lantana Creek which flows through the community. The first permanent settler in what is now Lantana was James Wetherbee who arrived on horseback early in 1892. He built a cabin on Raccoon Key and named it Wetherbee's Landing. In 1896, J.D. Day purchased land from Wetherbee and founded Day's Store and Hotel on what is now US-1A north of present day Lantana Boulevard. The store served as the center for socializing for farmers and their families until about 1915 when it burned down due to weather damage caused by a hurricane that year. In 1929, Harry Hargrave developed a farmstead called Hargrave's Station near present day Raccoon Key Road and established an outfitting business there which continued to operate until 1978 when it closed shop due to lack of customers during the Great Depression era . In 1934, Orville Eaves developed a small parcel of land east of today's Main Street between US-1A (now LaPorte Boulevard) and Hargrave’s Station Road into what would become Lantana Park today; this area later became known as Eves Park after Orville’s wife Eleanor Eaves died there in 1984 . Many people who lived or worked in Lantana over those years are buried there including United States Senatorsand two Governors . Today only traces of original homes remain from those years including some that have been completely rebuilt with modern materials .
