In 1860, a mill was built in Lantana and began producing coffee beans. The mill continued to operate until 1970. The first Brazilian coffee bean plantation was founded in Lantana in 1903 by Joaquim de Noronha and his family. The De Noronha Coffee Company operated for many years at the original site before being moved to their current location on Bald Cypress Lane near Fort Myers Beach in 2007.

The first human settlement in Lantana was founded by Captain James Cook on May 11, 1768, while he was exploring Pensacola Bay. He named it after his land grant from the king of Spain, Lantana de la Vega y los Negros (Tampa Bay), and landed there with his ship HMS Resolution on July 12th. A post office called Lantana was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1903. During World War II, the area became known as "The Death Zone" due to its high death rates from German submarines operating in nearby Gulf of Mexico waters during that time period. As a result of this designation and other factors such as poor soil quality and lack of industry for local consumption or export during those years—Lantana experienced only 2% growth between 1940 and 1980; its populace declined from 1,819 to 522 over that same time span. However since 2000s there has been significant growth throughout much of Polk County due to stimulus government spending which has led to job creation throughout many industries like agriculture and construction along with new housing development around Lantana Boulevard/SR 277 which now forms an important commercial corridor for both the townspeople and surrounding areas Lantana is located just north west of Kissimmee on SR 277 about 20 miles east southeast of Lakeland proper & 15 miles west northwest of Winter Haven According to the 2010 US Census report[1], Lantana had a total population of 522 people living within its borders including 399 households (of whom) consisted completely or mostlyof natives Floridians [2]. Of these 499 households 93% had children under 18 living with them, 84% were married couples living together ,and 73% were non-families . Hispanic make up comprises 6% or less out of total population according to Census report but includes all races making up 8 million Americans who identify as Latino[3] - making this one point where ethnicity becomes more important than race when examining demographics associated with locality As mentioned earlier – due largely to various government programs that have taken place over recent decades such as infrastructure projects such as widening I-4 southward through Kissimmee & Polk Counties – much large acreage within present day Lantana has seen significant redevelopment recently surrounding streetscape improvements such as: N railroad right-of-way running through centertown; addition/extension of sidewalks & development along south side Bvdwy.; additions/extensions along north sideBvdwy.; substantial increase in apartment buildings adjacent Main Street; extensive redevelopment along main drag featuring mixed use buildings - some characteristically Spanish Colonial Revival styled homes dating back over 100 years now beingcoreleased for rental purposes; retail establishments being developed across several blocks near intersection w/Main Street - anchored by several anchor store locations including WalmartSupercenter(opened fall 2013) - providing wealth opportunity & hope for most residents currently struggling economically thro' difficult times
